d. January 5, 1929 Glendale, CA.
At 15 years of age, McDermott’s father passed away, leaving him in charge of his mother and sister. A year later he began appearing on the stage in Sydney, Australia and later in London. In 1909 he signed a contract with the Edison film studios. He appeared in films and became friends with Mary Pickford during his early days in film. He married actress Miriam Nesbitt – she was eight years his senior - they split in 1922.
