Plain and simply put, I think she is a wonderful dancer. She is so light on her feet. Her being able to dance with Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire and another great dancer (that the name escapes me) did show her dancing ability from an early age. I believe she was 16 in American In Paris. Yes, she is a pleasure on the eyes to watch dance.
An American in Paris - Leslie Caron
- Dave Wallace
Leslie Caron is timeless in American in Paris with her youthful exuberance, charm and love of life. Matching every step with Gene Kelly, she dances into our hearts with every movement and with a focus that reaches out to each and every one of us. Gene Kelly is of course, phenomenal - an icon of musicals, which along with Singin in the Rain, shows why he is still considered one of the best dancers in the history of Hollywood. The supporting cast is strong, the score is remarkable and the sets outstanding. But it is Leslie Caron, in her first film, who stands out above all else - in this great film and many more - Lili, Gigi and in non-musicals too, such as in the L Shaped Room, Father Goose and more recently, Chocolat. So enjoy An American in Paris in all of its glory and of course, Leslie's performance!
I just love evrything she has done
Watching one now called Glory Rd with Ralph Meeker, never saw this one before. and not listed was wondering if one her very first roles
I'm sorry to disagree with one the previous reviewers, who apparently hasn't a sentimental bone in the body, nor an eye for beauty in movement, (any Dancing pics ) voice, (any Singing) character arc/depth, ("Father Goose") facial structure ("Lili"), anatomy ("An American In Paris") youth + class ('The Man With A Cloak") age + Class ("Chocolat"). It would be a shame to lose the awe of just looking at her (let alone her abilities when compared to the zero-dimensional "actresses" who are in 99% of today's movies, that I have seen...) because someone else chooses to miss these features. This is a rare actress, the likes of whom may never be seen again as there is no need: no musicals like Gene Kelly produced will be seen again: the painting in motion, the art of the dance. Pair that with real acting ability and beauty that is more interesting than 21st century glamour "divas" and you have a once-in-a-lifetime creation of Nature.
I watched many of the Leslie Caron movies shown this October to see if I liked any of them. I have to say I still can't find anything to like about this actress. It's rare for me not to find something to like about any actor or actress. There have been a few others I started out not liking but when I watched more of their work I have always found something to like or have even been completely turned around in my opinions but not with this actress. She was(is) quite beautiful but there was always a coldness or fakeness in most of her portrayals that turns me off. In Father Goose I've always wanted to tell Cary Grant "Don't marry her! You can do much better!"
Wonderful Musical Actress
One of the screen's most winning musical actresses. With her classical ballet training and appealing singing, she made a success of this genre. In later career, she has expanded into dramatic roles as well, increasing the range of her work....as Judy Garland attempted. When It comes to success like this, it's even harder to make comparisons with other stars...especially other with stars of the earlier golden age...whose talent was great, but whose opportunities were less.
