Biography CLOSE THE FULL BIOGRAPHY

A former heavyweight boxing champion, Tony Burton stepped into a role that seemed custom tailored for him when he appeared as Tony "Duke" Evers, cornerman to flamboyant prizefighter Apollo Creed, in the classic 1976 underdog tale "Rocky." One of three actors, along with Burt Young and Sylvester Stallone, to share the distinction of having appeared in all six films of the "Rocky" film saga, Burton made the role his own, steering the character from, initially, a bit player in the original film to principal confidant of both Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) and Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) in the sequels. While those films were unquestionably the highlight of his acting career, supporting roles in films such as director Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" (1980), the Richard Pryor-starred comedy "The Toy" (1982), and the 1991 fantasy-adventure "Hook" insured that Burton was near the top of casting directors' short list of reliable character actors. Tony Burton died on February 25, 2016, at the age of 78
