Many Objected To His Watson
The most important thing for Willie's Watson,or any other role was being believable-his friendship with Rathbone was quite clear in all Holmes films, and he was a lifeline to Baz when his marriage hit rough waters.Too bad he didn't continue the friendship after he stormed out of H'wood after the Sherlock Holmes Series,he lost a true friend, and colleague.Maybe Nigel would've brought him out of the doldrums like he did when he wired Bruce to come to LA to do Hound Of The Baskervilles, and begin the Holmes series.Dedicated husband and father, seriously wounded in WWI,versatile character actor, seemed to always keep busy in films.

I always felt watching Nigel that he was one of the family! He had a unique way of acting making the viewer feel that he was apart of them. He took many parts well, but none better than the bumbling Dr. Watson... Rest in peace my friend. You made a difference in the world!
Not A Stagey Actor Like Friend Rathbone
- Willie Bruce
These two will always be remembered as Holmes and Watson. And it's refreshing to know Bruce loved it.Heard some of their radio work and they were great, esp reversing roles.Seemed like they had fun.Probably kept the local busy with friends and co-stars.Enjoyed whatever these two acted in on film.I imagine Bruce could be quite stubborn at times.Rathbone a true gentleman.
What's Sherlock Without A Good Friend
- Basil's Friend
He may have been mostly a bumbler in the Holmes Universal Pics, but the friendship of real life makes him tolerable.Bruce was comical in the Holmes Series, but the World needed to laugh during WWII.He also displaying a great singing voice.Heartwarming to hear how he was grateful to Basil for throwing him a lifeline when he was depressed after a play failed to do well.Rathbone called him to come join him for the Sherlock Holmes film soon to be started. The rest is history.Hopefully they made peace after his fury with Rathbone to quit doing Sherlock after Dressed To Kill. Can understand feeling typecast, but I would think that better than a hit-or-miss Theatre career. His name couldn't save them all (Rathbone, that is).
Nigel Bruce as always plays a loveable Character but in this Film he plays a different Part. Driven to constantly test his ability to outwit Death and friend to the Cary Grant character I thought he shone in this film!
