In this biography the simple backwoods boy rises to become one of America''''s most beloved presidents.
After killing her treacherous step-father, a girl tries to escape the country with a young vagabond. She dresses as a boy, they hop freight trains, quarrel with a group of hobos, and steal a car in their attempt to escape the police, and reach Canada.
The robberies on Jasper Carrol's stages have been so frequent that the stage line plans to hold a stagecoach race with the winner getting the new contract. Tom foils Cal Barker's attempt to kill him and gets a confession from him that Kurt Morley is behind the robberies. But first Tom must win the race for Carrol although Morley's stages have him greatly outnumbered.
A model in an expensive clothing shop quarrels with another model, and an expensive gown is ruined. In order to pay for it, she asks her father, an artist, for the money. In order to get the money, the father gets mixed up with art thieves, is caught and arrested.
Michael Ramsay only has time for gathering his fortune in wheat. His wife seeks comfort elsewhere and, to avoid a scandal, her daughter Matilda assumes her mother's guilt. Ramsay nearly goes broke but gets rich again; his wife returns.

But what Gavin and his parishioners do not know is that Babbie is actually Lady Babbie, ward of Lord Rintoul.

"Slim" Sam Morton runs a ring of thieves specializing in dog-napping. John knows one of them from prison. One of the gang sells a dog to Dr. West. He also steals the keys to West's country house, The Lindens. The thieves burgle the house. In the sack of loot, John finds a box belonging to Ann, the woman he believes betrayed him years before...

Our heroes, Texas Rangers based in Laredo, are joined by a pompous and persnickity constable who plans to civilize and modernize law enforcement in Texas according to methods he's developed in nine years of law enforcement in New Hampshire. He accompanies them on an adventure in which they encounter the wily outlaw, Linda Littletrees. They lose Linda, but they do get rid of the constable only to be joined by an old friend of Reese's, a man who believes himself to be a jinx--with some reason. They set out again to capture Linda, but Linda gets a look at Joe with his shirt off and falls in love. She has him captured and tied up so she can marry him, and the other Rangers must rescue him. Joe escapes unscathed and Cletus breaks his jinx, but Linda eludes capture once more.
An airliner crashes in the South American jungle and among the survivors is a convicted killer and the lawman entrusted to transport him.

Josie takes the money and runs to Chicago, with Merridew, realizing he was tricked, in hot pursuit. Aaron arrives in time to keep Josie from letting Merridew "invest" her money.
