  • Great Director of Great Stars

Robert Wise directed many of the top stars of his era such as Clark Gable, Susan Hayward, Burt Lancaster, Julie Andrews Steve McQueen, Natalie Wood, Paul Newman, Barbara Stanwyck, William Holden, et al. Wise directed hugely successful big films such as Sand Pebbles, The Sound of Music and brilliant Academy Award Winning West Side Story. My favorite Robert Wise film is I Want To Live with a masterful Academy Award Winning performance by Susan Hayward, a classic film. Ms. Hayward like all great stars had standard "tricks" but in this film Susan Hayward drops many of them due to Wise's direction and is magnificent. Lionel Lindon's photography is also noteworthy. Mr. Wise who directed many a top female star such as Julie Andrews, Natalie Wood, Barbara Stanwyck, Joan Fontaine et al named Susan Hayward his favorite actress saying the late great Susan Hayward was second only to Garbo. Quite a compliment
