The Mick is quickly in five feet of trouble (over his eyebrows) when he is met with hostility by the school's commandant, Major Redfern Kelly (Dan Duryea) and the latter's sweetheart-secretary Jennifer Evans (Terry Moore); intimidated by the cadet drill instructor, Vince Perley (Christopher Dark) and the P.E. instructor Hack Marlow (Richard Jaeckel); attempts are made on his life by a cadet trio known as "The Three Beasts", and he is trapped in a three-against-one fight with rifles, although memory fails as to just where Rooney came up with his rifle. Just to keep him tested there is a big-speedboat vs. small-motor boat (Rooney's craft of course) chase in shark-infested waters. That comes right after he makes a startling discovery when he talks to his son's former roommate Chip Hastings (Warren Berlinger).

This Republic murder mystery starts with a radio broadcast by Greg Sherman (John Howard) who solves cases on the air that the local police cannot solve. As he names the perpetrator of a recent murder we see the criminal, who is listening to the show, become alarmed and start to make his escape. The scene shifts to the police department where the chief, fearing for his job, assigns officers to get something, anything, on Sherman and get him off the air. Meanwhile, Greg and his pretty wife Beth (Margaret Lindsay) are parting company. He's going to a party and she's going to visit her pregnant sister in the hospital. The next morning Greg wakes up and nudges his sleeping wife. When she doesn't respond, he pulls off the covers and finds not his wife but a strange woman, dead and with the murder knife still sticking up out of her back. While he's still recovering from the shock, Beth walks into the bedroom. Thinking that she has discovered her husband with another woman, she leaves and calls the police. The police are delighted of course, but Greg escapes as they are arresting him. Now he must solve the mystery by himself...

Among those who are fighting to have Congress re-establish the military academy at West Point in the beginning of the nineteenth century is a young Washington socialite, Carolyn Bainbridge (Maureen O'Hara). Congress resolves to revive the Academy on a one-year trial basis. Major Sam Carter (Laird Cregar), a martinet who doesn't believe a college can produce real fighting men, is made the Commandant, and determines to make soldiers - or failures - out of the small band of cadets, by enforcing stringent disciplinary action. Among the cadets are Howard Shelton (John Sutton), Carolyn's fiancee, and Dawson (George Montgomery), a Kentucky frontiersman. There is bad blood between the two from the start, and matters are worsened when Dawson falls in love with Carolyn. Many of the cadets resign, under the discouraging conditions and grueling punishment that is part of Carter's plan to make the school hard and the exercises difficult, and the number of cadets left is down to ten. Word arrives that the Indian chief Tecumseh (Noble Johnson) has gone on the warpath, and Carter is ordered to take part in quelling the rebellion, and to include the cadets along with the regular Bombadiers. Shelton, on patrol, is shot at by an Indian, and hot-headedly leaves his post in pursuit. Dawson leaves to bring him back followed by Major Carter who is captured by the Indians. Using tactics learned at West Point, the small band of cadets attack and demoralize the much larger Indian force, and succeed in rescuing Carter, and Dawson is wounded. Carter is grateful for the actions taken by the band, but says that Shelton and Dawson cannot remain as cadets since they had violated the rules by leaving their posts, and would be a bad precedent for future cadets. Carolyn has come to the Point to marry the unsuspecting Dawson, who thought she loved Shelton.

Jack Benny (Himself) is preparing his New Year's Eve radio broadcast but takes time out to take his valet Rochester (Eddie Anderson) to meet his girlfriend Josephine (Theresa) arriving on a steamer. Fred Allen (Himself) and his sister Barbara (Verree Teasdale) are also enroute to the dock to meet Barbara's daughter Mary (Mary Martin), returning from a personal appearance tour in South America. Josephine is her maid. Their cars get involved in an accident and, in a bumping contest, Fred reduces Jack's old Maxwell to junk, and is taken to jail. Mary loses her dress in an accident and Jack offers to get her another one, but winds up being arrested for stealing. Barbara tells Mary that Fred is a nervous wreck because of Jack's continual slander of him on Jack's radio program. Jack hires the Merry Macs (Joe McMichael, Judd McMichael, Ted McMichael, Helen Carroll) away from Fred and Fred decides to go to Miami for a rest. Jack decides to open his radio program from Miami. They meet, have another brawl, and end up in jail again. The two are in a motorboat accident where both are knocked unconscious and Mary, in an effort to end the feud, tells Fred that Jack saved his life. They have dinner together at Fred's apartment and Rochester, whom Fred has hired away from Jack, appears and the feud is on again.
