  • I appreciate this opportunity.

I do appreciate the opportunity to write a few thoughts about Esther Williams. Like so many others, I was sad to hear of the passing of Esther Williams. The more I learned of her, and the more of her films I saw, the more I enjoyed her performances, and the more I admired her. I grew to admire and appreciate her gifts in swimming, as well as her acting skills, whether in comedy, dramatic roles, or swimming films. I enjoyed them all. People like Esther Williams, Doris Day, Rosalind Russell, Lucille Ball, and their predecessor, Ginger Rogers, are/were, a special breed of woman, the likes, of which, I feel, are missing in today's youth. I hope, through these classic films, the wonderful qualities seen in the work of these women, will live on, setting great examples for the women of today. Thank you, TCM, for the indescribable service you offer to each of us each time we have the privilege of watching, not only Esther's films, but those of the other ladies I referred to in the above paragraph. Thank you.

I just read Million Dollar Mermaid which is the story of Esther Williams life. It was a wonderful book and I hardly wanted to put it down. I'm a stay at home mom who has not been to the gym in a while. I was so inspired by her story that I joined the local YMCA and am swimming and working out again. I plan to watch all her movies as they are available on TCM and sure would love to tell Mrs. Williams what a fan I am...

I first fell in love with Esther Williams in the 1942 Andy Hardy movie "Double Life" and the crush has never gone away. A flawless face, beautiful figure and warm personality make her a legend. I know you're spoken for, but I have to ask, will you marry me?

I loved all of her movies when I was a child and loved them even more as an adult. She was always my favorite movie star. Oh if they only made movies like them today. It was so wonderful to see movies like hers. The critics say she was'nt a good actress, but in my book she beats all of the actresses of today. They make one. movie and become one movie wonders. The movies of today are mostly trash. I agree with Carol Stanton, Esther and Doris Day are really special.

It says that Esther Williams did not swim in the movie Take Me Out To the Ballgame. To the contrary she did swim, but not in her usual theatrical way. She is shown swimming around the pool singing Take Me Out to the Ballgame while Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra watch her from the balcony window. Sinatra slides down the palm tree outside his room and she comes out of the pool and proceeds to serenade her. One of my favorite Esther William movies by far!

I learned to swim because of this awesome lady. She was my influence for many years. Both her and Howard Keel shaped my personality. This sounds stupid but at the early age I was influenced by anything. Thanks, Ester, you are a very special lady. Enjoyed your book also.

I have been a big fan of hers ever since I was a little girl, she is one of my favorite actresses of all time. I love to watch her films, I could watch them over and over again and would never get tired of them. She is an excellent swimmer,a wonderful beautiful actress, and a successful business woman. You can't get much better than that. She is one of a kind, and I think it's safe to say that there will probably never be another one like her. For me, she is one actress that will never be forgotten.

I don't remember seeing her films in the 50's, so I have really enjoyed her films on TCM and I've watched them many times. Her films starring with Van Johnson are my favorites. Her interviews with Robert Osborne have been particularly interesting to me. I would like to see more of them.

    • 2007-07-05

Your bio of Esther William films DID NOT INCLUDE (1) a scene in the film "A Guy Named Joe" with Spencer Tracy, Irene Dunn and Van Johnson. Also, you omitted the film "Easy to Love" in which she starred with Van Johnson and preceeded "Bathing Beauty". If I'm wron let me know. You might double check with Miss Williams,

Esther Williams is the true vision of what a real mermaid should be. Her movies were quite professional and her underwater work was amazing. It is no lie to say that she is the reason synchronized swimming is a sport today.

I had the pleasure of meeting Esther when I was ten years old and visiting MGM. She was beautiful, gracious and kind to me and encouraged me to swim for fun and fitness. Because of her encouragement I have been a swimmer throughout my life.

She was wonderful. The first time a saw one of her movies was in Cuba, when I was around 8 years old. I'm a good swimmer myself, so I used to imitate her on those beautiful back strokes. She's still one of my favorites. There will be nobody like her.

I was a young girl in Ottawa around l952 when I saw my first Esther Williams movie. I was hooked....I became a swimming instructor at age 18 and by the time I was 19, I went to Weeki Wachee, Florida to become a mermaid... Now, in 2006 I still watch all the Esther Williams movies that you show on Turner Classic Movies....I wish you would show more as it's very difficult to find her movies anywhere else. Judy Gauvreau

Just wanted to comment on Esther Williams. I grew up in the 70's and the first time I saw one of her films I was hooked. No matter where I am, when one of Mrs. Williams movies is coming on, I make sure that I am tuned in. She has the ability to take you through all of her emotions with her. Please play more of her movies on regular basis. Thank you.
