Marion Scott (Dave O'Brien), honorably discharged WW II soldier, in "civies" and carrying a suitcase containing his uniform and medals, is hitch-hiking to the small hometown of a buddy killed overseas, intending to make it his home. En-route, he encounters wealthy society girl Wilhelmina Hammond (Kay Aldridge), who is running away from her stuffed-shirt fiancee, Alvin Bailey (Smith Ballew) and has taken his car without permission. Marion and Wilhelmina are bickering over a blow-out and an empty gas tank when the local cops appear and haul them off to jail on a car-theft charge. Wilhelmina establishes her identity and is released and, intrigued by Marion whom she suspects is a deserter, arranges his release also. She takes him to the Hammond estate and tells Marion, who does not know her true identity, she is Mrs. Hammond's secretary. Wilhelmina has no keys to the home and they are arrested again when they are caught crawling into the house through a window. This time reporters and photographers discover her identity and plaster the papers with a story of an heiress running out on her rich fiancee to take up with an unknown stranger. Over the objections of the Hammond caretaker, Wiggins (Walter Catlett), she hires Marion as a chauffeur and stands her ground when her irate mother (Isabel Randolph) and angry fiancee rush home from New York with their entourage, including: Aunt Harriet (Ruth Lee), an old maid who had an unfortuance love affir during WW I; Patricia (June Robinson), "Willie's" young and mischievous sister; Camille (Vicki Saunders), the family dressmaker, and Champ (Guinn "Big Boy" Williams), Alvin's physical instructor. It becomes a battle of wills as Mrs. Hammond and Alvin are determined to break up a romance that doesn't exist, as "Willie" and Marion are constantly bickering, and Aunt Harriet who is all for the pair getting together.

Sunset Carson's first western and, despite the misleading video box that indicates otherwise, he was billed as Sonny Carson and was billed 2nd behind Smiley Burnette. Republic dropped the "Sonny" but he was also billed beneath Burnette in three more films---Bordertown Trail, Code of the Prairie and Firebrands of Arizona---released between July and December of 1944, when Burnette and Republic parted company and Carson was given his own series that featured no continuing sidekick actor. Burnette was off the screen from that point until February of 1946 when he made the first of his co-starring Durango Kid films with Charles Starrett. This film finds Sunset Carson (as Sonny Carson) meeting and teaming up with Frog Millhouse (Smiley Burnette) who is driving supplies in to Placer City for wealthy mining-equipment man J. B. Murdock (Harry Woods.) Through a runaway horse ruse, the supplies are hi-jacked by Marjorie Malloy (Ellen Hall) and her companion Ned Crane (Kirk Alyn.) Murdock has foreclosed on most of the miners on Round Nugget Hill and is withholding needed supplies from the rest. Marjorie and Crain are robbing Murdock's wagons to give supplies to the miners. Murdock and kindly-town doctor Lee (Frank Jaquet) are in cahoots to take over all the local mining operations, but Sunset and Frog, with whiskers and posing as a French mining engineer, soon have all the wrongs righted.

Press agent Jimmy Gates (Marty May) gets an idea while watching a New York parade, for a returned war hero Sergeant Buzz McAllister (Macdonald Carey), with his chief client, singer Judy Ames (Betty Rhodes); Dona Drake (Dona Drake), leader of an all-girl orchestra; his photographer Foggy (Cliff Edwards), and his secretary Myrt (Minna Gombell). Jimmy, thinking Judy needs publicity in order to get a singing job on a radio program, thinks that a romance between her and the war hero would be just the ticket. Judy isn't too warm on the idea but agrees to go ahead for Jimmy's sake, with whom she thinks she is in love. She agrees to work on Buzz that night at the Manhattan Canteen, a converted night club where show business people entertain and wait on service men. Foggy is assigned to get pictures of Judy and Buzz together but fails through ineptness. Buzz escorts Judy home in a rainstorm and, while helping her out of the taxi, slips and falls into a deep puddle. Judy asks him to come in so she can dry his soaking-wet uniform on the kitchen stove. Foggy gains entrance to the apartment via the dumbwaiter and snaps a picture of Buzz in his underwear. The next morning Buzz tells Jimmy that he intends to marry Judy, which is going further than he had intended. He also decides he can't use the compromising - but innocent - photo for publicity purposes but does announce their - he thinks - publicity-only engagement. That clinches the deal for Judy to get a radio program called "The Girl I Left Behind." Buzz proposes to Judy, who realizes she loves Buzz and not Jimmy, and they, not knowing that Jimmy has announced their "engagement", decide to keep it a secret.

Stone), a little chiseler who has attached himself to Mike, follow a clue to a small town. Unknown to Mike, Mousey is out for revenge and kills two innocent men before they learn the identity of the real Jimmy Valentine (Roman Bohnen). Mousey tries to kill Valentine but he himself is killed in the scuffle. Mike refuses to identify Valentine, claiming that one of the murdered men was the real Jimmy Valentine.

Following the wedding, they return to the house after Ferris, accompanied by Peggy Athens (Judith Barrett), has broken in. Caught by Detective Reardon (Thomas E. Jackson), Ferris kills the officer and escapes. McNeil and Joyce arrive immediately afterwards and are accused of the killing by the neighbors. John Marlin (John Miljan), assistant District Attorney, railroads the lovers because he wants to use their prosecution to boost his drive for the District Attorney post.Fred is sentenced to hang and Joyce is given life in prison.

Stumbling into the wrong station, WVOX, he meets Jane Arledge (Judith Barrett), program manager for local town-magnate, Harry Fox (Charles Brokaw.) She directs him to WBAM and he finds it is a collection of junk in an abandoned stable. Humiliated, he boasts to Jane that he will put the old station on its feet again. He sends for his announcer friend, Tiny Martin (Don Wilson), after convincing station-owner Pete Jones (Spencer Charters) that Martin can give valuable aid in reviving the station. Merchants fear to use WBAM, although they despise Fox and his crony, Mayor Applegate (Ferris Taylor), who is up for re-election. Learning that the merchants are holding a secret meeting, George uses a ruse to broadcast their suspicions about Fox and Applegate. They repudiate the statements, but George prepares another strong blast against them for a later broadcast. This angers Janes, who believes the attacks on her boss are unjustified and she tells George he should return to New York. While George waits for his train, Jane learns that Fox and Applegate have connived to loot the town treasury and, with Martin, she rushes to WBAM and adds her own evidence to the charges prepared previously by George and reads them over the air.

Kay hates everything connected to the sport, and Hal keeps her ignorant of his profession. But Slug and Spider tell the Conrads of Hal's identity as "Chopper" Hal, and Kay breaks off the engagement while Hal takes to the open road. Hal, now a tramp, picks up odd jobs where he can find them and one of them leads him to a training camp where he meets Slug and Spider with their new fighter Lion Lee (Jimmy Baker). He also meets Kay and learns that her father is in desperate need of money. He accepts Spider's offer to fight Lee, on the condition that he take a dive in the third round. Kay learns of this and begs Hal to fight an honest fight if he is determined to fight. He tells Spider that he'll fight Lee on honest terms and the match is on.
