Often a maid, but made it!.
- John Price
Mary Wicks how we all miss your absence. All the kind of cameo roles which seem to be her lot, dear Mary never failed to deliver all those wise cracking lines with down to earth meaningful comments. At times if the script of any score was not that careful she could had almost stole the show. How on earth did the US TV networks not see that great potential in not given Mary a comedy time slot of her own one asks. Most of us have our own favourite character in which she played in whatever performance, to which my own being Stella the maid in Warner's 1951 On moonlight bay. Now there's a role in which she really was just perfect for. God bless you Mary.
Mary Wickes... what a treasure
- Pat Smith
I just watched Little Women again with Mary Wickes as Aunt March.....what a glorious actress.... and realized I haven't seen her celebrated on TCM. I know she has over 50 films to her credit and ALWAYS gives a memorable performance. I would LOVE to see her honored here on my favorite channel. Please keep her in mind! Thanks for continuing to show beautiful films, uninterupted and commercial free..... what a pleasant change from other stations.
They don't make 'em like that anymore
- Peter Reinertsen
Whenever she appeared in a film, play or TV show, you always knew you'd be getting a laugh from Mary Wickes. She had the ability to shine brilliantly, and yet remain such an integral part of the scene that she never overwhelmed it, but terrifically complimented it. It takes great talent to be funny, drop your line, and then disappear before that bit is overworked. This was always evident with Miss Wickes, and so characteristic of all those great character performers of her time. It is almost a lost art. Mary knew the importance of being the second banana, but was tops in her class. Watching her in her films, brings one back to a time when people were funny with their well developed personnas, and their humor never had to descend to a level that today is borderline pornagraphic. She should be observed, and studied to see how easy she made it all seem. Hats off to you, Mary. You gave many a person joy doing what you did always so well.
The Great Mary Wickes
That's what I think of her. There was no one like her. And not one show, movie or whatever, you did not take notice of her. Most of the shows she was in, you looked for her...my case, the reason for watching it in the 1st. place. I loved to watch Father Dowling Mysteries. And how can anyone not watch White Christmas and not take to her in there. I'm a Classic movie buff and my taste run different than alot of others but Mary Wickes is one very special actress. It would be to your own advantage to watch movies (Sister Act) for one, shows or anything you can find her in. Her so called small roles were always BIG notices because of her! Thank goodness for film so we don't loose the opptunity to see great actors and actresses now and forever, like Mary Wickes.
