Walthall he studied law before going to New York and acting on Broadway. He entered films in 1910 at the request of D.W. Griffith and played in one of the first films ever made in Hollywood, "In Old California" in 1910. Brother of actress Anna Mae Walthall (1894-1950), he was married to actress Mary Charleson (1890-1961). Walthall passed away during the filming of "China Clipper" in 1936, shortly before he was to film his character's death scene.
