Simon Lute ekes out a modest living chartering his skiff to tourists and guiding them through the labyrinthine bayou. When a mysterious stranger asks him to take them deep into the swamp, Simon is curious, particularly when the man requests to make part of the journey alone. After the man's corpse is discovered the following day, Simon learns that the stranger had robbed a bank and that hiding the loot in the inhospitable bayou was the man's objective. But what should Simon do with this newfound knowledge?
A disgruntled settler kills an Apache chief at Fort Yuma, and the fort's commander knows that the chief's son, Manga Colorado (Abel Fernandez), will seek revenge and go on the warpath. He sends word by a courier to Fort Apache where a supply column is due to head across the desert to Fort Yuman, but the courier is killed by Mangas. The column, under the command of Lieutenant Ben Keegan (Peter Graves)who hates Apaches because he doesn't trust them, and because his assigned scout is Jonas (John Hudson), the brother of an Apache girl, Francesca (Joan Taylor), whom Keegan has been having an affair with. Also accompanying them is Melanie Crowne (Joan Vohs), who is going to do missionary work among the Apaches. Mangas attacks the column wiping out everybody but Keegan, Jonas and Melanie. Francesca is killed while trying to warn Keegan, and he realizes how foolish he had been in his prejudice and in keeping his love secret. The Apaches, dressed in the uniforms of the dead soldier, plan to gain entrance to Fort Yuma and massacre the men there.

Peggy Donovan (Joyce Reynolds) enters an exclusive but financially-strapped finishing school for girls operated by Colonel Matthews (Thurston Hall) and his sister Emily (Julia Dean). Student Lucille Farnsworth (Laura Elliot) discovers the Peggy carries $30,000 in her luggage and reports it to the Colonel. She also writes to a Chicago address on the luggage that Peggy is at the school. The letter puts gambler Dave Vickers (Wilton Griff) on Peggy's trail. Peggy convinces the Colonel that the money is rightfully hers and offers to buy up the school's outstanding notes for a partnership. When Vickers arrives, Peggy confesses that her late father was a professional gambler and Vickers' partner. The latter claims half of the money which her father had saved away for her. She is willing to divide the money but when the Colonel learns it was won in a questionable card game, he turns it over to the police.
