With his all-American good looks, Ned Vaughn was ideally cast as minor characters in "Apollo 13" and "Frost/Nixon," two Ron Howard movies set in modern America. However, he has also appeared in a supporting capacity in numerous television series since the late '80s, starting with the critically acclaimed "China Beach," a drama series set in an evacuation hospital in Da Nang during the Vietnam War. From 1988 to 1991, he played Corporal Jeff Hyers, a good-hearted combat soldier who met an untimely end in one of the show's darker hours. He also landed a small part in the hit thriller "The Hunt for Red October," and following "China Beach," found parts in television movies and series throughout the rest of the '90s, most notably on the legal drama "Murder One." Toward the end of the decade, he also appeared in the film "Life" as the younger version of Sheriff Pike, the villain who frames Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence's main characters for murder (and is convincingly played by R. Lee Ermey as an older man). From the '00s onward, Vaughn continued to guest star in all manner of television series, but his more prominent roles have included men with a military or law enforcement background: during the fourth season of "24," he played Mitch Anderson, who assists terrorists in downing Air Force One.
