    One of the tops. Hard edged and focused. Wish she'd done more and that I'd seen her onstage as well as in her handful of flicks. A Van Fleet performance counts for something. Bio needs to mention her comedic work in I Love You Alice B. Toklas. Very funny with the brownies. Also mention that the combo of I'll Cry Tomorrow, The Rose Tattoo, and East of Eden, all in a single year and after having just won a Tony, probably helped conribute to her Oscar win. Kind of out of her element when trying to "sex it up" in Gunfight at the OK Corral, but Wild River should have gotten her a second Oscar nomination -- film never gained an audience in theatres, so that probably didn't help her chances. I once had a brief opportunity to ask Melvyn Douglas about his work with her in The Tenant: "She was very, very unhappy during that film." I'm not sure what that meant, and I wasn't in a position to ask him to eleborate.
