Colonel Ryder, the publisher of a magazine, dies while on vacation. Tony, his swinging nephew, inherits the magazine and takes over. Presently, the magazine is planning to expand and to do so they need some capital. Tony's trying to arrange a loan through his friend. He is then informed by the hotel detective of the hotel that his uncle died in, that on the night of his death, a woman, wearing only a towel, came out of his room, and ran away before the detective could catch up with her. They suspect that the Colonel was "with" her on the night he died, cause he was smiling when he died. Tony and two of his uncle's confidants are worried that not only if the bank hears of this they will not get the loan but the magazine wholesome image could be tarnished. So they ask the detective to stay around so he could identify her. What they don't know is that the woman is Katie Robbins, one of the magazine's researchers and that she entered the room by "accident". When the detective identifies her and after having a few misconceived conversations with her, they suspect that she is trying to extort them, and she thinks that Tony's a nut.

Wally Hogan has things going his way. He is the manager-trainer of Bullet Bradley, a fighter who has just won the lightweight championship. Life suddenly takes a not-so-happy turn, however, when Bullet gets drafted. Hogan's gangster partners "persuade him to enlist and keep an eye on the fighter, who is subsequently declared psychologically unfit for the Army. Enter Herbet Tuttle, a draftee eager to have Hogan turn him into a fighter. Hogan Reluctantly agrees only after he discovers Tuttle's aunt is the beautiful singer at a nightclub. From then on it's a case of stringing Tuttle along while trying to get close to his aunt. To further complicate Hogan's life there is a rulebook Military Police Officer who tries to squish the shenanigans.

Smith sails the ship to Australia where he charters it to Harry Gorvahlsen and Dr. Whitmore who claim to be studying flora and fauna. To fill out his crew, Smith "shanghais" Capt. Raikes who, by this time, has also made his way to Australia. During the course of the voyage, it becomes clear that Gorvahlsen and Whitmore are actually in search of a cache of gold that's been hidden on a South Seas island. Smith also seeks this gold, which he considers his own, as does Capt. Raikes. Complicating this 3-way rivalry is a growing shipboard romance between Smith and Dr. Whitmore's beautiful daughter, Luana. Events reach a violent climax when the treasure-island is finally reached.

Fortune-huntress Gladys Hayden (Virginia Field) moves into rooms adjoining Henry's at his swank New York hotel. He joins a large crowd on the street and suddenly finds himself being interviewed by Jean Mitchell (Virginia Wells) on a "Streets of New York" broadcast. When Henry says he is the only millionaire from Badger, Oklahoma, Jean impulsively offers to introduce him to any listener who sends in a box-top of her sponsor's face powder. Henry invites Jean to dine at the Automat and a ride home on the subway and, since he borrows nickels from her for food and the subway, she doubts he is really a millionaire. She is unaware he couldn't get change for a $100 bill. On the subway, they encounter Spike Jones and His City Slickers and, learning they are out of work, Henry gives them each $100 bills. Millions of women, clamouring for dates with Henry, send in box-tops. Jean and her uncle dream up a radio program that promises some lucky Cinderella a date with Henry each night. Jean puts on an act that makes Henry, self-vowed woman-hater, think her job is in jeopardy and he goes along. And Gladys makes strides with Henry with her phoney southern accent. When Henry learns that he has been tricked into the radio scheme, he pretends to be bankrupt...

Because of the war, there aren't enough men at Adams College for all the girls, but Betty (Betty Jane Rhodes as Betty Rhodes) has no difficulties as she has a monopoly on stud-athlete Pete (Bill Edwards). The other girls, particularly Marian (Marjorie Weaver), think this is unfair, so Marian institutes a system of rationing dates. Pete is rated as thirty points and Betty is furious as the other girls bypass the 4-F's and slide-rule geeks to save their ration points to date Pete. Betty drafts him for the Varsity Show, but when the pressure of preparing for the show hurts his studies, Marian volunteers to tutor him and has him all to herself. Scholarly John "Two-Point" Simpson (Johnny Johnston as Johnnie Johnston) auditions and, since he isn't hep to the jive, is laughed off the stage. Betty helps him and soon "Two-Point" is in the groove and makes a hit, and Betty discovers she is in love with him. The faculty cancels the date-rationing plan and Johnnie, whose point value has gone up, thinks Betty is the cause of the ruling and dates Marian for spite. Betty broods and knits booties for her sister's baby, but conveys the impression to Marian that she is to have a baby. Johnnie learns he is the "suspected" father and, thinking it is another of Betty's tricks, plans to leave school. The other girls, led by Bubbles (Marie Wilson), are worried about Betty's future stigma and round up a justice of the peace and Johnnie. Betty confesses the hoax, and the girls start squabbling over the available-again Johnnie, while Betty and Johnnie make use of the still-available Justice of the Peace.

Made at the time when the National Barn Dance program, on radio station WLS (for World's Largest Store and owned by Sears & Roebuck) in Chicago, was as big on a national scale listening audience as "The Grand Ole Opry" out of Nashville. The film highlights the leading acts then performing on the program; comedian Pat Buttram, announcer Joe Kelly (before his Quiz Kids stint), Lulubelle & Scotty (Scott Wiseman and wife Myrtle), the Dinning Sisters trio, Arkie the Arkansas Wood Chooper (Luther W. Osenbrink) and the Hoosier Hot Shots quartet, whose musical abilities and creativity were vastly underrated. The piffle of a story begins in the early days of radio (Calvin Cooledge was President) but otherwise seems to take place in 1944, which made things easier on the Art and Set directors. Agent John Berke (Charles Quigley) thinks advertising executive Mitcham (Robert Benchley) wants to put together a program of hillbilly performers---a term used until later years when Nashville went uptown and changed it to Country & Western---and hies himself down to a country town where Lulubelle (Myrtle Wiseman) & Scotty (Scott Wiseman) hold a barn dance in their barn every Saturday night featuring themselves and their farm hands, although it is not quite clear just what chores the Dinning Sisters perform. He signs all hands to a contract, brings them to Chicago and learns that Mitcham has no intentions of putting together such a program to be sponsored by the Garvey Soup Company owned by the Garveys (Charles Dingle and Mabel Paige). A bit of plot contrivance---a small bit--- changes all of that, and the National Barn Dance is born.
