All I know about Thorpe is he injured Esther Williams in a movie and indirectly, Cyd Charisse. In my book, that's a career ending performance. Esther Williams did not like the man to begin with and his movie list is mostly B movies.

Richard Thorpe directed one of my favorite comedies The Horizontal Lieutenant with two of MGM's brightest stars of the 60's Jim Hutton and Paula Prentiss. A goofy wonderful film. Mr. Hutton and Ms. Prentiss were a wonderful team! I wish they had made one more film after this one when Paula Prentiss and Jim Hutton became major stars. There was possible MGM film Hedda Hopper wrote about called And Now To Bed, but that never materialized. Richard Thorpe was a great studio director working with all the major stars at MGM such as Lana Turner, Spencer Tracy and James Stewart, and Steve McQueen among many many others. I also liked one of his last films at MGM a fine Western The Last Challenge with Chad Everett.
