A Fine, Versatile, Long-lived Actor
- stephen talbot
- 2009-07-04
My father had a remarkably long and varied career as an actor, spanning the 20th century. It's hard to think of another performer who played so many different roles in so many different media. In his 20s and 30s he was a leading man on the theater circuit in the Midwest and a matinee idol at Warner Brothers during the Depression. He appeared in over 150 movies, which must be some kind of record. Later, he became a fine character actor and worked steadily in television, especially in the 1950s and '60s. And in his later years, he returned to a successful career on the stage. He was active professionally well into his 80s and lived till the age of 94.
