The police pick up Mac, while Tom trails Marie (Virginia Dale) and Mike (Jack Overman). Joe is murdered for leading Tom to the scene of the crime, and Marie, who had been hired by the killer to get Tom at the apartment when the crime was committed, is choked to death. Tom, following the killer of Marie, is almost trapped and killed himself, but is saved by Mike.

Republic, never a company to not try getting ahead of the curve and with writers who could remember the 1930's social conscience WW I vets-returning-home films, made this in mid-1944 (a full year before the end of WW II) as a don't-let-it-happen-again sermon. The semi-prologue opening finds Father Jim Donnelly (John Litel) before a post-war planning board in Washington and, as Priests quite often did in 1930 and 1940's films, tells his point-making story in flashback of how WW I vet Eddie Ballinger (Don Barry as Donald Barry), shaken by battle experiences anyway, returns home to a job that is no longer there for him and finds "No Help Wanted" signs standing in his way of making an honest living. Despite the pleas from his mother (Emma Dunn) and his sweetheart Lucy Manners (Lynne Roberts), Eddie starts hauling booze for bootlegger Tim Oberta (Alexander Granich) and takes up with entertainer Lola (Ruth Terry), who eventually betrays him, mainly because she is a one-name character and that's what one-name characters are there for...especially in a movie with the lead playing his 1944 version of Jimmy Cagney in a 1933 Warner's film. Father Jim makes his don't-repeat-the-past point in less than an hour as the hearing committee had also seen and heard the story before.

Vaudeville performers Van Moore (Dick Foran) and Terry Allen (Irene Hervey) split up after a quarrel. Terry moves in with Madge Donovan (Joan Davis), a dancing comedienne friend. She gets a job as secretary to Kirk (Donald Douglas), personnel manager of a defense plant, and conceives the idea of staging a talent show from among the workers. She sends for Van to help her stage the show but he arrives and finds her with Kirk and they break up again. When the show goes on, Kirk takes bows for its success. When it comes Terry's turn to sing, she is terrified without Van. But when she hears her accompaniment, she knows it is Van playing it, and walks out on the stage to find him at the piano. Madge tells the plant president (Samuel S.Hinds) that Van, not Kirk, really produced the show and he announces that Van and Terry are now co-directors of the entertainment for all the company's plants.
Daisy Baker, a Chicago "refuse collector" who fancies herself as a theatrical agent, finds a play which had been thrown away by two Portuguese playwrights. Without bothering to get permission, she sends it off to a New York producer named Rupert Shannon and he wires her to come to New York immediately. Daisy and her two showgirl friends, Gloria and Maria, arrive in New York where the two girls assume accents and pretend to be the sisters of the playwright. Shannon agrees to star them in a production of the play. Two former friends, Lena and Louise, recognize the girls and threaten to blow the whistle unless they are also cast. Meanwhile, the two actual playwrights sell the story to producer Sam Grohman who hires Lena and Louise.

Lured to the mountain resort hideout of the robbers and accompanied by Dr. Bill Elliott (Patric Knowles) and Peggy Osborn (Elyse Knox), they also meet old friend Johnny Long (Himself) and his band and singer Marcia Manning (Ginny Simms). Dr. Elliott and Peggy are being held in a remote cabin by the robbers, but Weejie rescues them by turning himself into a human snowball that becomes an avalanche that engulfs the crooks.
"Gals, Incorporated" is a nightclub sponsored by elderly playboy Cornelius Rensington III (Leon Errol) that features Glen Gray and the Casa Loma Orchestra, with all the other employees and entertainers being beautiful girls. Molly (Grace McDonald) is president of the corporation and Gwen (Harriet Hillard) is head of the executive staff. Jennifer Rensington (Minna Phillips), Cornelius' sister, threatens to cut off his share of the family income unless he settles down and gets married. The girls persuade the unwilling Molly to pose as Cornelius' wife. The sister arrives with Bill Rensington (David Bacon), Cornelius' son by a former marriage. Molly, while attracted to Bill, has to play out her role and Bill, thinking she has married his father for his money, turns his attention to Gwen, a scheming mercenary. Gwen arranges for Bill to cross the state line with her and get married, but Cornelius and the other girls catch up before the ceremony can be performed. Bill is told the truth about the hoax, and gathers Molly up in his arms.
Hubert Wilkins (Stuart Erwin), a bookkeeper for Mr. Bates (Thurston Hall) by day and an air raid warden by night, patrols the district where his boss' warehouse is located, and finds two employees removing raw silk stocks. They say they are working under Bates' orders and brush him off. Hubert wants to marry Emily Conway (Elelyn Venable), company secretary, but can't see how he can afford it since he has loaned a salesman, Fuller (Chick Chandler), $400 with deeds to four lots as security. Don Bates (William T. Orr), son of the boss, is engaged to Emily's sister Sally (Vivian Blaine) though his father disapproves. He and Emily encourage Sally and Don to elope. Hubert, a little tipsy, buys two more lots from Fuller and goes to Bates' home and asks for a raise. He is fired and, the next morning, Emily also for helping Don to elope. Hubert discovers that the lots he bought are worth $100,000 and, unknown to Bates, buys the company. While on warden duty that night, he discovers that the two employees he previously saw taking silk from the warehouse are actually stealing it.

An Army jeep is forced off the road by fleeing bandits. Sergeant Dick Manson (Don Terry), his kid brother Jack (Gene Garrick), and Corporals Frenchy Devereaux (Leo Carrillo) and Andy Jarrett (Andy Devine) follow and are joined by a posse of deputy sheriffs. Three of the robbers are killed in a shoot-out, but one of them, Al Bennett (Don Porter), escapes after wounding Jack, who dies. Bennett figures a perfect hideout would be in the Army, and becomes one of the recruits assigned to Manson. He gets into trouble because of his attitude, and particularly with Manson when he gets the Colonel's daughter, Helen (Elyse Knox), into covering up his A.W.O.L. G-Men reveal that some of the bank money has been passed at a local jewellery store. When Manson learns that Bennett has given Helen a gift trinket, he jumps at the clue, and drives her down to question the jeweler. They find him murdered. At the Army war games, Bennett blows up a bridge and several men are killed, and he diverts the blame upon Frenchy and Andy, who are court martialed for negligent homicide. Manson discovers a witness who identifies Bennett as one of the bank robbers.

Reissued by Realart Pictures in 1953 as "Texas Road Agent", with a title change because RKO had just made a 1952 film using this title, and this was the first year that Universal's "Road Agent" was known as "Texas Road Agent" and that was not a 1941 alternate title as shown by some revisionist-history sources. The actual 1941 filming title was "The Sonora Kid." Duke Masters (Dick Foran) and his two pals, Pancho (Leo Carrillo) and Andy (Andy Devine), are undercover agents for an express company sent to round up a gang of bandits who have been holding up stages carrying gold to the cattlemen of the district. They begin by hijacking a gold shipment from the three bandits who took it from the stage. They take it to town and drop it at the bank. The money was the annual payment to the cattlemen, who are excitedly surrounding bank president Sam Leavitt (Samuel S. Hinds). Steve (John Gallaudet) and the two gunmen who helped him rob the stage are in the crowd. They report this unexpected turn of events to their boss, Big John Morgan (Morris Ankrum.) Morgan tries unsuccessfully to pin the original robbery on Duke and his pals. He later confers with Leavitt who is an unwilling tool in the holdups. Morgan tries to decoy Duke, Pancho and Andy out of town while his gang holds up the bank, but Duke, with the help of Leavitt's daughter, Patricia (Anne Gwynne), beats them to it and cleans out the bank himself, taking the money to Leavitt's home to cache. But Morgan, Steve and the gang are in pursuit.

A talented 10-year-old singing prodigy, Foxine LaRue (Edith Fellows), who is only slightly less artificial and theatrical than her name, is pushed into vaudeville by her stage-mother mama, Gert LaRue (Margaret Irving), who is even more artificial and theatrical than her name. Foxine's pretty and older sister, Mary LaRue (Julie Bishop as Jacqueline Wells) makes sacrifices to support the trio. Al Partridge (Scott Kolk as Scott Colton), a hollywood agent becomes interested in Mary and takes the family trio to Hollywood in the hopes of Foxine getting into the movies. After several incidents by the rowdy Foxine on the train, and later at International Studios, Foxine is further from being in the movies than she was in New York. Gert decides that a "hoax" kidnapping is just the ticket to get Foxine the publicity to land a studio contract. That night Foxine dresses as a boy, disarranges her room, leaves a "ransom note" and hops a freight train. The police arrive the next morning and hear Mary accuse Al and Gert of staging the kidnapping, and they are arrested. Foxine leaves the train several hundred miles away and takes shelter with the good-natured Pascual Orozco (Leo Carrillo) and his family. The arrested pair are released when the police receive another ransom note (sent by Foxine.)

Hart continues the advances but when Fred and Paul go to him asking why the song hasn't been published, Hart tells them it isn't any good and he was using Fred to help rid him of Eileen. Fred now realizes he loves Edna. A popular radio singer sees Fred's song in Hart's office and sings it on the air, and it becomes a hit.
