Best of Andy Hardy
This has the best, but also a bit of the worst, acting in the Hardy films. Mickey Rooney's portrayal of a son beset by anxiety over his mother's illness is some of the best acting he ever did, and very moving. Once again Lewis Stone and Fay Holden give us wonderfully realistic performances as James and Emily, and Cecelia Parker is good as Andy's pest of a sister. Why oh why is there no good information on Stone and Holden? Stone, at least, deserves a biography and I hope one day such a book will be forthcoming. I would love to know more about this dignified and courtly man who was among the favored and favorite of LB Mayer. The Hardy films show the best of Mayer's involvement in his films; the cinematography is fabulous and looks like it was filmed yesterday.
