• Steiner the Teacher

  My father was a student of Mr. Steiner in the 1920's and 30's. While working for the May Company, my father got the lead in the Student Prince. Each year the May Company would put on a series of Plays and Musicals. Often times, members of Holly Wood society would come to see these, and those who stood out, were offered jobs, contracts, screen tests or music and acting lessons. Mr. Steiner heard my father sing as the "Student Prince", and took him under his wing. My dad sang in the choruses behind Janette McDonald, Nelson Eddy, and Bing Crosby movies to name a few. Mr. Steiner wanted my father to become an operatic Tenor and worked with him for several years. When WWII came along, my father was drafted and by the time he got out, his singing career which had included several performances singing solos at the Hollywood Bowl was finished. My father passed away in September of 1989, after passing his knowledge of singing and announcing in Radio and Television to me, and I am now retired after 40 some odd years in the industry. But my father and I both owe everything we became to Mr. Steiner. His dedication to music and voice work was the basis of our careers.

• Steiner/Rogers connection

  I noticed the score in White Heat is akin to Rogers' work in Victory at Sea. The use of sweeping violins and high wind tremelos are the very same, i.e. comparing the ocean wave theme in V@S to the action music in WH. I wonder who had the greater influence on the other. Looks like Steiner gets the nod. Am I right? Thanks, dp
