Sam Spiegel ran his Horizon Films unit at Columbia and brought that Studio and Hozison great fame and fortune. Some of the great classic films produced by Horizon were Suddenly Last Summer, The Chase, Nicholas and Alexandra, and several authentic materpieces such as The Wild One, On The Waterfront, The Bridge on The River Kwai and the landmark Lawrence of Arabia. Columbia gave Spiegel wide berth and Spiegel produced these classic films starring such as Elizabeth Taylor, Marlone Brando, Katharine Hepburn, William Holden, and Alec Guiness who won the Oscar fo The Bridge on the River Kwai and Peter O Toole whose peerless performance in Lawrence of Arabia should have won that star an Oscar. ( Years later the Academy awarded O Toole an Honorary Oscar). Sam Spiegel lived larged and hired only the greatest talent such as Maurice Jarre, and had a legendary relationship with David Lean whose direction of both River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia deservedly won the great Lean awards worldwide. Spiegel said the Mediterreanean in style in a huge yacht with the likes of among others Greta Garbo whom he entreated to return to films in any film the great Star wished but always declined Spiegel's film offers.
