Herbert Spencer

Veteran composer and arranger who worked extensively in radio, film, theater and TV, spending 20 years at Twentieth Century-Fox under renowned musical director Alfred Newman. Spencer received Oscar nominations for his work on Ronald Neame's "Scrooge" (1970) and Norman Jewison's "Jesus Christ Superstar" (1973), though his most indelible impact on pop culture is as the composer of the theme for "The Andy Griffith Show". The last decade or so of his career was spent primarily as the orchestrator and arranger for prolific film composer John Williams. Spencer collaborated with Williams on features including the "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones" series; Spielberg's "1941" (1979), "E.T., the Extra-Terrestrial" (1982), "Empire of the Sun" (1987) and "Always" (1989); Mark Rydell's "The River" (1984); George Miller's "The Witches of Eastwick (1987); and John Hughes' "Home Alone" (1990).
