I haven't seen a bad performance yet. In all of her roles her spunk, charm and energy are evident. The Maisie series is great, but Lady Be Good is my favorite. TCM should have an Ann Sothern "star of the month" fest.

I have admired the outstanding performances of Ann Sothern since childhood. Her Oscar-nominated performance in THE WHALES OF AUGUST is perfection. Her mastery of the old Maine accent was not an easy feat. Her heart-to-heart scene with Lillian Gish is acting at its best! This was her farewell performance in film - what a terrific exit! With the other great performances from Bette Davis and Vincent Price - this is a film to treasure!

Ann Sothern's wonderful performance in her last film, THE WHALES OF AUGUST, was so very deserving of her nomination for the Oscar! Indeed she should have won. Her old Maine accent was perfection - not an easy one for any actor! The film is beautiful with three other terrific performances from Lillian Gish, Bette Davis and Vincent Price. Miss Sothern was such a talent - actress, singer and dancer. She could do it all. Her youthful beauty is legendary - truly one of the most beautiful women in the world at the time. Her inner beauty was even greater and it shines in this great film! I loved her and always will! Stephen Baldridge-Louck, author

Loved the Maisie was a Lady film with Ann Sothern! Such a great cast, touching, funny, elegant, everything one might wish for in a movie! So glad I gave this one a try. Now I want to see more Ann Sothern films10-Maisie films were madewould like to know how each one ratesif there are better ones than this one, I will be happily surprised. All the stars could have been the lead in this film. Nice cast with the Butler C. Aubrey Smith, Lew Ayres, Maureen O'Sullivan! Delightful "oldie, but goodie"! Thanks TCM

Just watched "Maisie Was a Lady!" I was going to be "too busy" on a Saturday morning to watch another oldieBut what a delightful film I just enjoyed. Love this channel and especially love the 1930s-1940s movies. Wow! Nice cast, fun conversational interplay. Ann Sothern was so smooth with her style and lovable toughness, the film has such an endearing quality with the excellent C. Aubrey Smith as the Butler, Lew Ayres, Maureen O'Sullivan all having beautifully understated supporting roles. Really liked this film, want to see more of her films (the Maisie films were done 10 times!) Would like to see the ratings for which ones were considered bestif there are better ones in the series I shall be happily surprised! Thanks TCM.

I first saw her in "Maisie", she was so entertaining I had to learn more about her. It is interesting that she was a sub for Jean Harlow in the character role of "Maisie" which was originally for Jean! She was so awesome at it they made a whole series of "Maisie" movies and it was one of their most successful movie series of all time for MGM! One persons heroine overdose became another person's lucky break, as sad as that sounds to say, it is the truth in hollywood of the that day. Jean had such a future and blew it all because of an addiction which was no worse than alcohol or being discovered as a nose picker. Anyway, I had to sit there and watch all the Maisie films and set my DVR to record the future movies I found of her coming on in the next couple weeks as well! I didn't find her "Stunningly Beautiful", yet she was attractive and her acting was so "Attractive"! You can't help but want to see her movies!

Since I first saw her fifty years ago, I've always loved this charming lady! There is no one like Ann Sothern! She was more than beautiful, with unusually soulful eyes, a melodious voice, a unique and fascinating quality about her that just makes you want to smile. She was highly talented and creative, not only as an actress but as a singer/composer as well. I agree with Claudette that she was underrated and deserved much better material to work with than she was usually given. Still, she was able to work magic with whatever she had, and we are very lucky to have her movies. Many thanks, TCM, for including them in your database.

  • underrated and too often missused

So easy to watch and fully herself;she was perfection in Letter to Three Wives, and she played the girlfriend of Edward G. in Brother Orchid deliciously. Would have loved for her to have been used as a lead in A pictures much more. Truly a natural talent with great heart and comic timing.
