    Though I am not much for absolutes, after seeing the work of Shimura in such films as Ikuru, Rashomon, Throne of Blood and Seven Samurai, I am convinced that there has never been a finer screen actor than Takashi Shimura. He is like Spencer Tracy, to compare him with someone more widely known to Americans, but better! The subtlety of his performances and how powerfully moving he is, and if you try to parse how he does it- it is impossible to describe! One of the treasures of our age is the collected work on film of this great actor.
