Jacques Sernas was born in Lithuania on July 30, 1925. His family moved to France when he was a boy. He was 15 yrs. old when France lost the war. He began working with the Resistance movement helping to transfer funds as a courier. He was 17 when he was arrested and incarcerated, then sent to the labor camp at Buchenwald in 1944. In 1945 just before the American and Russian armies came to liberate the camps, the Russian, English and American prisoners were shot. The remaining prisoners, among them Jacques Sernas were also to be shot before the Allies' arrival, but they rioted and took over their part of the camp. Jacques' film career was launched in the 1946 film "Miroir" playing a character named Battling-Joe. He quickly rose to become a featured player in French and Italian films, but remaines largely unknown outside Europe until Robert Wise cast him as Prince Paris of Troy in the Warner Bros. 1956 film "Helen of Troy" Although he and his co-star Rossana Poesta were relative unknowns in the U.S., they had already made several films together in Europe, and despite not being churned into the Hollywood machine both stars left a lasting impression in international cinema with Wise's great film, particularly Sernas who, after being relegated to U.S. tv epsiodes of various dramatic series such as "Climax!" and "Conflict" in 1957, returned to a flourishing career in European films and tv miniseries. He was last seen in a supporting role in the tv series "Pope John XXIII" as a Cardinal in 20006
