Lovable Character Actor

I first saw S.Z. Sakall in "In the Good Old Summertime" with Judy Garland and Van Johnson. I just loved his character, Mr. Oberkugen. Even though he was a supporting actor in the film, he completely stole the picture-- and that's saying a lot when you have Judy to share the screen with. He was absolutely hilarious as the crabby, emotional music shop owner who could at the same time be fatherly and warm. I've seen him in several other films like "Cynthia", "Casablanca", and "Yankee Doodle Dandy." I look forward to seeing him in other classics like "Christmas in Connecticut" and "Ball of Fire." However, even if he had only made "In the Good old Summertime", that would be enough for me to place him among my favorite character actors. He's the type of man I'd want as a grandpa or uncle--someone who seems cranky on the outside but who's a softie on the inside. His European accent is very distincitve and adds an air of old world charm to him. What an underrated actor!
