Psychiatrist Dr. Michael Madden (Tom Conway) is visited by a man, Steve "Creepy" Bolin (Hurd Hatfield), wearing a weird checkered coat, and when Madden learns that Creepy is subject to death-like trances and the fear of being buried alive, Madden concludes Creepy is obviously a psychopath (at least, until a real one comes along)with possible criminal tendencies. When leaving, Creepy tells Madden he is a friend of the doctor's no-good brother Fred (Marten Lamont),while also throwing a few sinister-and-leering glances in the direction of Madden's wife Betty (Noreen Nash.) Madden wastes no time in notifying the police to pick up Creepy, evidently on a general nuisance charge of looking like Dorian Gray. But Creepy is also sneaky and eludes the police and, when next seen, he and Fred are robbing the Anson Jewelry store across the street from Dr. Madden's office and he shoots and kills both the owner (John Hamilton) and his son (Fred Browne) in the process. Dr. Madden hears the shots and rushes over but is slugged by Creepy and he and no-good Fred carry off Madden in their get-away. The police show up and immediately tab Dr. Madden as the prime suspect based, evidently, on him having an office across the street.

The performers (including Carmen Miranda as Michelle O'Toole) perform, Magonnagle orates and the citizens are buying. The crooked political machine gets worried and a few plot twists later (as can only be performed by four screenplay writers evidently in separate rooms), Clark has replaced Magonnagle as the candidate.

The other doesn't have one girl and quietly sells insurance. The insurance seller invests money in his brother's show and, in the process of protecting his investment, gets involved with his twin's romances. Things eventually work out and the TV promoter winds up with the manufacturer's daughter (Paula Drew) and the salesman with Sheila Ryan. Lita Baron (in her Isabelita days) gets to dance a few numbers with the music of the (12th-billed) Guadalajara Trio, and Nick Moro & Frank Yaconelli, the old vaudeville team that was seen together mostly in Tom Keene westerns at Monogram in the early 1940's.

She returns but gets a singing job this time so foregoes serving the cease-and-desist notice. The Three Stooges are on hand as waiters and Connee Boswell, Louis Jordan, Will Osborne and Mary Treen provide the music and songs in addition to Gale Storn on "Oh, Buddy" and "On the Sunny Side of the Street."
Larry Brewster (Jess Barker), partner in the music publishing firm of Brewster and Crow, returns from a trip to find that his partner, J. C. Crow (Alan Mowbray) has hired Pat O'Rourke (Julie Bishop)as a song plugger. Conden had already sold the baby for $5,000 and has no intention of returning the money, so he substitutes the child of the sister (Teala Loring) of his wife (Jayne Hazard). He also sells faulty synthetic tires and Mary's brother Freddy (Sam Edwards) is killed when one of those blows out. Bill and a group of defense workers try to trace the tire by its treads and finally locate one of Gilin's car lots as the place where it was sold. Gilin orders Nikki to set a trap for Bill so he can be eliminated. But Nikki warns Bill through Mary. Bill, feeling that Nikki knows the source of the "hot rubber" goes to see her at Gilin's apartment,where Gilin knocks him out. Tom, in his newly-issued Army uniform, pleas with his old boss to give up this unpatriotic racket and is shot by Gilin.

The henchman manages to stop and slug Kingsford, but is himself killed when he tries to flee and his car bursts into fire. The police think the dead man is Kingsford, so Bill hides him while he and Betty try to get evidence against the real culprits.

Somewhere between kidnapping and gentle persuasion, Sonny takes Bob and his girlfriend Linda Carroll (Peggy Moran) to his penthouse hideout and orders Bob to write the music. After completion, Sonny and his mob use some strong-arm persuasion to get it on "The Hit Parade." Bob tries to trick Sonny saying he can't write any more music because of his unrequited love for music comedy star Magda Delys (Gertrude Michael). Sonny's solution is to have his men bring Magda and a minister with a marriage license to the penthouse. Bob is forced to begin the ceremony but Public Enemy No. 2, Big Foot Louie (Warren Hymer), barges in and reveals that his own hobby is writing music. And Sonny recognizes Magda as his long-lost love Sadie McGlonsky. He and Big Foot decide to quit the rackets and surrender to the District Attorney so they can collaborate on writing hit songs "in the pen."

Card sharps Chipper Morgan (Preston Foster) and Darby Randall (Arthur Treacher) pick the wrong victim, Detective Willis (Alan Dinehart), on a transatlantic crossing, and are arrested upon docking in New York and returned up the river to Rockwell Prison, their old alma mater. They had played brilliant football for "dear old Pen" during their prior semesters, and prison coach Slim Nelson (Slim Summerville) is happy to see them back for graduate work, especially with the annual grudge game with Larson State Pen coming up. Willis, who has been named the new warden for Rockwell, gives them soft jobs and then places a large bet on the Larson eleven. Both Chipper and Darby feel badly about the raw deal handed fellow "student" Tommy Grant (Tony Martin) and his sweetheart, Helen (Phyllis Brooks), who were innocently caught up in a phoney pension racket ran by swindlers Jeffrey Mitchell (Sidney Toler) and Ray Douglas (Robert Allen), and were both jailed. When Phyllis is released from Stillwell Prison for Women, she tells Tommy about the two men and their racket, and he decides to escape, even though he has only a month more to serve, and put an end to their scheme. He plans his break for the night of the prison's "varsity show" and tells Chipper and Darby, who promise to help him. But the pair tie up Tommy and make the break themselves, dressed as women. They go to Springfield, save the victim's money, get a confession from Mitchell and Douglas clearing Tommy and Helen, turn them over to the sheriff...and race back to Rockwell to find their team behind 14-9 late in the game. Can they lead old Rockwell to a comeback victory?

Made before the birth of the production code, reviewers of the day found much to object about in the implications of Alice Faye's "Nasty Man" song with the Meglin Kiddies, and the dog action in the "Your Dog Loves My Dog" number by Vallee, Faye, Jimmy Durante and Dixie Dunbar. The geometric dance arrangements used in the Vallee, Durante and Cliff Edwards "Every Day Is Father's Day" was not cause for Busby Berkeley to lose any sleep.

Traveling west, former peace officer Frame Johnson and his three friends arrive in Tombstone, a lawless town controlled by the three Northrup brothers. Preceded by his reputation, the town Council tries to get him to take the job of Marshal. He says he will not wear a badge again but seeing the ruthless Northrup murders he accepts. After a killing on both sides, although outnumbered, Johnson and his two remaing friends head to the OK Corral for a shoot out with the two remaining Northrups and their men.
After becoming involved in a killing, Kiddo gets on board Boyton's ship. When he learns what happened he dumps her on a South Sea island. Tom Brian marries her, and when Boynton returns he's furious (he wanted to marry her). When Boyton is killed Kiddo is accused of the crime and even Tom thinks she's guilty.
