  • PAUL ROBESON: FILM PIONEER

After many years of work, my McFarland book PAUL ROBESON: FILM PIONEER (which was greenlit by his son several years ago) has been completed and is at the publisher. This first-ever comprehensive investigation of his life, as exemplified by his work as an actor, is loaded with rare photos and memorabilia never seen in print before. My grateful thanks to TCM for showing some of Paul's groundbreaking films, and helping me to get my book finished. It will be available later this year. Thanks again, TCM!

Paul Robeson, scholar, world-class athlete, singer, actor, writer and activist, was a true Renaissance Man and a film pioneer whose work in that medium has only been touched upon. I have been working on a forthcoming book, PAUL ROBESON: FILM PIONEER, for many years; hopefully this will help him get his due. My thanks to TCM for being the ONLY place to see his films (even ones that are NOT available on DVD, especially James Whale's great masterpiece, SHOW BOAT). Paul was a rare artist and an even MORE rare human being, who basically sacrificed his own well being for the benefit of others. And he was one hell of an actor, absolutely mesmerizing, no matter the quality of the vehicle.
