Son of a sea captain and husband of actress Florence Smythe, Roberts was a veteran stage actor debuting in 1880. He appeared on Broadway in a number of plays including Uncle Tom's Cabin, The Confession and The Bird of Paradise. Often referred to as the Grand Duke of Hollywood, he was a regular of the Cecil B. DeMille team and appeared in 23 of DeMille's films, best known for his role as Moses in 1923s "The Ten Commandments.
