Son of a sea captain and husband of actress Florence Smythe, Roberts was a veteran stage actor debuting in 1880. He appeared on Broadway in a number of plays including ‘Uncle Tom's Cabin,’ ‘The Confession’ and ‘The Bird of Paradise.’ Often referred to as the ‘Grand Duke of Hollywood,’ he was a regular of the Cecil B. DeMille team and appeared in 23 of DeMille's films, best known for his role as Moses in 1923’s "The Ten Commandments.”
