A charismatic blonde with a winning smile, Hilarie Burton brought an upbeat energy to her work as VJ and co-host of MTV's popular video countdown show, "Total Request Live (T.R.L.)" (1998-2008). With a natural presence in front of the camera, Burton went on to land the role of Peyton Sawyer on the popular teen series "One Tree Hill" (WB, 2003-12), proving to be more than just an on-air personality.

Born Hilarie Ross Burton on July 1, 1982 in Sterling Park, VA to parents Bill Burton, an antiques collector, and Lisa Burton, a real-estate agent, Burton grew up as one of five children, including three younger brothers. An active child, she became interested in acting at the age of five and took up cheerleading in the fourth grade. While a student at Sterling Park's Park View High School, Burton was a member of the school's pep squad and made the varsity team during her sophomore year. Active in a number of other school clubs, Burton proved to be adept at multi-tasking, serving as student council president and thespian society president. Upon graduating from high school, Burton set her sights on New York City and enrolled at Fordham University in Manhattan to study English.

Just two weeks into her freshman year at Fordham, Burton and a friend were recruited by an MTV rep to be audience members on "TRL." During the taping, she was chosen to participate in a VJ contest - being given 30 seconds to interview host Carson Daly. In front of the camera, Burton's natural on-screen charm won her the opportunity to conduct MTV's red-carpet interviews at the 2000 "MTV Video Music Awards." Impressed by her charisma and upbeat personality, MTV gave Burton a regular job as a correspondent on "T.R.L." where she often conducted interviews outside the studio in Times Square. Continuing as an honors student at Fordham (she later transferred to N.Y.U.), Burton managed to balance a hectic schedule between work and school. Popular with "T.R.L." viewers, Burton continued with the show, later serving as host. She went on to host a number of other MTV programs and specials, including "Beat Seekers" (2002-04), "MTV at the Olympics," "T.R.L. at the Superbowl" (2002), and her own series "Hits." With a keen sense of pop culture and music, Burton also landed her own syndicated college radio show, W.O.B.U.

Anxious to add acting to her resume, in 2002, Burton landed a guest spot in an episode of "Dawson's Creek" (WB, 1998-2003), appearing as a VJ in the episode, "100 Light Years from Home." WB network execs took notice. The perky beauty quickly landed a lead on the network's new teen drama "One Tree Hill" (2003-12). Cast as Peyton Sawyer, a high school cheerleader with an artistic, punk-rock edge, Burton landed the role she was made for. Relocating to Wilmington, North Carolina, where the series was shot, Burton continued to serve as part-time host on "T.R.L.," commuting from Wilmington to Manhattan every Friday for the live taping.

Adding to her already hectic schedule, Burton made her feature film debut in "Our Very Own" (2005), opposite Allison Janney and Jason Ritter. Taking on more film work between seasons of the successful "Hill," Burton went on to land roles in the films "Solstice" (2006), "Normal Adolescent Behavior" (2007) and "The List" (2007), opposite Malcolm McDowell.
