I am surprised that there is not more written here about Charles Bickford. Watching the TCM movies I liked him immediately and watched every movie that he was in. Like the reviews say, he at first seems gruff but it doesn't take long to see beyond that. It is too bad that the family he leaves behind can not find more about him. I always feel nostalgic watching him.

My husband and I have really been enjoying Mr. Bickford on The Virginian. Even at that age he was such a handsome man. I love the part he played as the Owner of Shiloh, Mr Grainger. He was such a natural. Seeing him in this show reminds me of the past movies I have seen him in. He was always quite special. And of course, always so handsome. You don't see guys like him anymore. I guess that's because there was only one. He is missed.

Looking for details on Charles Bickford's family. Looking for information r/t Ed "Blackie" Bickford his brother. My Aunt was married to Blackie and they ran a gambling house in Beverly Hills. There was a raid on the house and the house was auctioned off. I have no dates that is what I am looking for and if the house is still standing on Sunset Hills Road, Beverly Hills, CA. The house was palatial Florentine Hill-top Villa overlooking the Sunset Strip. I have some newspaper articles, looking for more articles, dates and photos if possible. My Aunt and Blackie had no children, after a divorce she married my Uncle, they had no children either. My Uncle was my Mother's brother. My Aunt was also bit player and a stand in for Ginger Rogers. Looking for any information for our family tree. My Uncle passed away a while ago and gave away all of his memories before moving in with my parents in the 80's. That's why I have no memories of their years together in California. I live on the East Coast and research from here is difficult even with a computer. Looking for stories for my children to pass on to their children. Charles Bickford great character actor never miss him on TCM, many of his films are some of my favorites. You know some of the old actors no one remembers their names. With my family and friends I am the go to girl for information on old film stars. Having grown up watching all their films on TV and stories from my Mother. My Mother saw the movies in the theaters when she was a young girl in the Forties. She loves to tell those stories of spending all day Saturday at the movies. Who hasn't seen all those great movies of Charles Bickford's just look at the list. Well I hope this note helps to open some dialogue about great old film stars and some shared information. TCM is a great site for people who still the love and remember the best of the best old film stars. Thank you eveyone who reads and responds with stories of their own.

  • Gruff on the outside but sweet inside.

I haven't seen Charles Bickford in many films but I adore him in the Farmer's Daughter. My favorite line is " I sure feel like a tramp in my old blue serge". He acts like you should be afraid of him but he really is a pussycat. I never tire of his role in "farmer's Daughter" or the whole movie for that matter. It delights me and makes me smile all the time.
