I USED TO WATCH "SHERLOCK HOLMES" WHEN IT WAS BROADCAST. TOO BAD NONE OF THE EPISODES ARE NOT LONGER SEEN ON TV. I ALSO LIKED DR. WATSON WHO WAS A JOY TO WATCH. I HAVE MORE TO SAY AT A LATER DATE. RRM

Basil's marriage was happy and fulfilling and his second wife was the love of his life. I an so tired of seeing people who disparage her, like on that aeful blog, which I detest and am never visiting again.

His voice, his skills as actor, his actually good looks,he deserved so much more of a career, and less of a narcissistic 2nd wife. She no doubt in my mind was responsible for his not being all he could be!We'll always love you,Baz,Nunc Dimittis.

I just can't say how cool he was. And how gorgeous I think my generation are rediscovering the classic movie stars as quite a few kids on tumblr are into Basil and Errol and even more obscure but gorgeous men like Anton Walbrook who I totally love.

I forgot to mention that Basil Rathbone, along with Robert Taylor, is my FAVORITE actor! They have something special that I just can't put my finger on, just sheer awesomeness, I guess! They were in a movie together, and I wish tcm would play it please. Basil and Robert are so very good in "Private Number", so please play it soon tcm, and thank you!

Basil Rathbone has to be one of the greatest of actors of all time. He could do anything extremely well, and that voice always makes me swoon! I adore him in the "Flirting Widow" movie. His features and voice can't be beat. He plays a fantastic villain, and his comedy skills are top notch! My dream is to see every one of his movies, so I hope TCM will start playing all the titles that can't be bought or rented more often. Thank you Basil for the many pleasures you have afforded us all. R.I.P Basil Rathbone, I love you!

While many others won kudos for bringing Shakespeare to screen,he acted in plays and screen adaptations.Would've loved to see his One Man Shows, would've been woth traveling for.Maybe had a second wife who loved to spend, but she seemed to support his career and was a good wife.He seemed to appreciate her for this. His earlier marriage seemed to be a rash decision, but he still was respecting of the needs of wife and son, much to criticism of family. No wonder he had such nervous energy! No one even close to him since.

  • Basil Was Totally Charming As A Villain and Hero

    • 2012-07-12

May have had some tragedy in his life and self-critical of his actions, but he was a war survivor and expected to be the strong one for his own family and his father and sister after his younger brother killed in WWI.He always seemed to be a rock on screen, but I suspect a very generous and caring nature, maybe stubborn, too. He seemed a more solid man than all the pretty boy actors.Love ya,Baz,forever!

  • SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST SHERLOCK HOLMES!

BASIL RATHBONE IS BEST REMEMBERED FOR HIS EXCELLENT PORTRAYAL OF SHERLOCK HOLMES IN THE MOVIES, BUT HE WAS SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST SHERLOCK HOLMES! I HAVE SEEN HIM IN AT LEAST FOUR NON-SHERLOCK HOLMES MOVIES, AND HE WAS EXCELLENT IN ALL OF THEM-CAPTAIN BLOOD, ANNA KARENINA, ROMEO AND JULIET, AND A TALE OF TWO CITIES! A CONSISTENTLY GOOD ACTOR!

All-time favorite Holmes(Hound),swashbuckler, could overact at times due to stage acting, deserved award for The Dawn Patrol,or at least nomination vs. If I WERE King!

He was both a top villain and hero and it was always a joy to see him in any movie.

  • Rathbone under-appreciated.

They don't show his movies often enough, and the movies they do show are just the standards: Sherlock Holmes, Robin Hood & 1 or 2 others. There are a lot of GOOD ones that sit on the shelves that no one sees. I get tired of seeing the Maltese Falcon every other week. They never show 'The Mad Doctor', 'Kind Lady', or any of the early movies.

As Sherlock Holmes, our hero, no one was better. The bad man in David Copperfield, no one could have played it so well. Of course Sir Guy in the Adventures of Robinhood. Quite dashing, and cunning as the persuer in Confession. He was fantastic in that movie as the bad fellow. As a child, I had no idea he had so many diverse roles. He played them all so well. Thank you TCM for showing these older films. I would have never seen Confession if not for you.

I saw Rathbone give a lectutre-recital when I was a teenager. The audience was large and most enthusiastic in loving this aged artist as an "actor's actor." Mr. Rathbone died the following year at 75. He was quite nimble and a fine gentleman, belonging to a graceful age of another time. I also spoke to the German actor, Anton Diffring; hence, my e-mail title.

Mr. Rathbone is the greatest of the 'villians' actor guild. No one tops his severe grace. Love this man. Kai!

BASIL RATHBONE WAS A FANTASTIC ACTOR. HE WAS ABLE TO PLAY ROMANTIC TO VILLIANOUS ROLES WITH EASE. HE WAS BY FAR THE BEST SHERLOCK HOLMES ON SCREEN. HE AND NIGEL BRUCE WERE QUITE A TEAM AND HAVE BROUGHT ME YEARS OF PLEASURE. I MISS YOU BASIL THANKS

Rathbone was a fine overall actor, who is unfortunately for the most part remembered for his Holmes portrayal, and bad guy roles. He was of course capable of doing much, much more. Unfortunately he was typecasted and locked into these similar ventures. If you want a real treat, there is a collection of E. A. Poe's works read by him on CD, to say that they are good, is a major understatement. They are at times better and more riveting than watching a film. If you are into classic poetry, you can find some works read by him on 78's on ebay, probably will make it to CD eventually. What a voice, he dominates the diction and is quite well animated with all. You can find the Poe collection on Amazon.com, it is done with Vincent Price, who is also great, but Rathbone is unbelievable.

He was the best Sherlock Holmes that ever hit the big screen! And there will never be one to top him. I have all 14 movies and will never watch another actor because Basil Rahtbone is the one and only Sherlock Holmes!

Basil Rathbone was a fabulous actor-far, far better than any other to play Sherlock Holmes, yet he should be remembered for much more than just Holmes. What a face, what a voice!Hopefully one day, much more of his earlier work will be released on dvd, so that people can see the wide variety of roles he played.

I am very glad to see that MPI has reissued the Nigel Bruce-Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes series. I lookforward to your including Captain Blood and Dawn Patrol in you programming, along with other films of Basil Rathbone that I have already recorded. Please recommend his autobiography, In and Out of Character, to TCM viewers. thanks, http://www.geocities.com/lord02141/scottlord.html
