I met Joe Besser and his wife Erna in the late 60's. He was always trying to give me money to take my wife to lunch. He adored Erna. He gave her anything that she would ask for. If she sneezed he would call the paramedics lol. He never said Goodbye because it was final he would say So Long. He owned a 69 Chevelle which I love working on and is how I met him. He did not drink alcohol. One time I took him to the DMV to renew his license and they asked him if he knew the penalty of drunk driving was and he replied "I don't drink" and was very upset. I used to check on him everyday and one day I found him deceased in his bed. My wife and I arranged the funeral arrangements and the Screen Actors Guild paid for everything. I would love a book that was written by Greg on the Autobiography of Joe Besser.
Not Curly or Shemp, But Not Bad.....
I actually enjoy the comedy of Joe Besser. The shorts that he made with the Three Stooges were mostly remakes (I think) and were probably some of the worst that they made. I used to hate it when the Three Stooges theme would start playing and he'd sing out "Hello!" until I discovered the secret to enjoying Joe Besser...if you don't really pay attention to Larry and Moe and focus on Joe---watch it from his "point of view"---he is a laugh riot. I love that man now. Too bad most people just don't know how to appreciate him.
