Born 1917 in NYC. Directed and acted for the Mercury Theater before entering films. His Hollywood career was cut short by the House Un-American Activities Committee hearings when director Edward Dmytryk identified him as a communist. Directed a 16 mm documentary called "The Hollywood Ten" to raise funds for the defense of the hearing's victims. Moved to France and directed there, then directed for the stage in London. In the 1970s, resumed directing in the US.
