Biography CLOSE THE FULL BIOGRAPHY

As a founding member of the pop group the Mamas and the Papas, Michelle Phillips' clear, bright soprano was an integral element of the group's soaring four-part harmonies, which helped to make songs like "California Dreamin'," "Monday, Monday" and "I Saw Her Today" hits in the late 1960s. The group's sun-dappled image stood in sharp contrast to their emotionally tumultuous lives off the stage; her husband, John Phillips, tried to exert complete control over her life, which the free-spirited Michelle countered through numerous affairs. After the Mamas and the Papas broke up in 1968, Phillips enjoyed a prolific run as a tabloid favorite after affairs with Dennis Hopper and Warren Beatty, as well as a long if unremarkable tenure as an actress in films and on television while raising her daughter, Chynna Phillips, as well as ex-husband John Phillips' son, Tamerlane, as well as a son and a foster son. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, Phillips was a survivor in both the literal and figurative sense, having both outlived all the other Mamas and Papas and gaining control of her own life and legacy.
