The locals are friendly until one of the vets beats a local kid in a drag race, after which the six are driven out of town. After coming upon a small farm, the fugitives are allowed to hide out by the two sisters who run the place. Things go smoothly until one of the vets, after smoking the locoweed growing nearby, tries to rape one of the hosts. Being part Native American, her sister decides to get revenge by casting a hex that steadily does in each of the unwelcome guests.

Lundy dies of a blood clot during the bout. At Barton's hotel, after the fight, Dennis finds Gannon (William Tannen) and Lundy, where he learns that Belzig is Lundy's real name and that Barton and Gannon had the fight fixed for Lundy to take a dive in the first round, but Barton told Lundy to wait until the seventh and Harper didn't last that long. Dennis is knocked out and comes to to find police Lt. Burger (Richard Travis) in the room with him with Lundy dead. Accused of the murder and out on bail, Dennis starts his own investigation and finds that Gale Chase (Rebel Randall) is connected with Gannon. He makes Gannon think that Gale is double-crossing him, but is arrested by Burger before he can harm Gale...(end first story...start second story)...Irma Rand (Joan Valerie) hires Dennis to pose as Ted Fallon, husband of her step-daughter Sylvia (Wanda McKay). She introduces him to Eddie (Abner Biberman) and Bill Rafferty (Anthony Warde), who knock him out and he awakens to find himself next to the body of the real Ted Fallon. He goes to Sylvia's apartment where he is again slugged by the two thugs, but this time he awakens and finds both men dead. The always-late Lt.Burger accuses him of these crimes. He learns from his buddy, Professor Shicker (Edward Brophy) that Sylvia had cashed $30,000 worth of bonds belonging to Rafferty and is planning to flee the country with Irma. Catching up to them Dennis and Burger learn that Irma killed Ted Fallon...and Sylvia, believing that Rafferty did it, killed him and Eddie.

The Cisco Kid (Duncan Renaldo) and Pancho (Leo Carrillo) encounter the preacher, and head for Silver City. They subsequently reveal Gentry's machinations, and restore Silver City to the decent town it previously was.

Psychiatrist Dr. Michael Madden (Tom Conway) is visited by a man, Steve "Creepy" Bolin (Hurd Hatfield), wearing a weird checkered coat, and when Madden learns that Creepy is subject to death-like trances and the fear of being buried alive, Madden concludes Creepy is obviously a psychopath (at least, until a real one comes along)with possible criminal tendencies. When leaving, Creepy tells Madden he is a friend of the doctor's no-good brother Fred (Marten Lamont),while also throwing a few sinister-and-leering glances in the direction of Madden's wife Betty (Noreen Nash.) Madden wastes no time in notifying the police to pick up Creepy, evidently on a general nuisance charge of looking like Dorian Gray. But Creepy is also sneaky and eludes the police and, when next seen, he and Fred are robbing the Anson Jewelry store across the street from Dr. Madden's office and he shoots and kills both the owner (John Hamilton) and his son (Fred Browne) in the process. Dr. Madden hears the shots and rushes over but is slugged by Creepy and he and no-good Fred carry off Madden in their get-away. The police show up and immediately tab Dr. Madden as the prime suspect based, evidently, on him having an office across the street.

Kelly meets Laurey Roberts (Ann Savage), who gets him to take her to the mining-camp operation as a cook, as she is running away from her ex-husband, Tom Hammond (Douglas Fowley), who has just been released from prison. Hammond catches up with Laurey, but he is killed in a gun fight, and Kelly and Laurie leave looking for a peaceful life in Texas.

Her paper, "The Illustrated Press", following its usual policy of socially-correct muckraking by crusading editor Steve Wilson, is putting heat on the chief of police (Robert Shayne.) But Lorelei believes the chief is qualified to do the job. She and managing editor Steve Wilson (Philip Reed), who, in the film series, is wrong more often than right, discover a corpse and then proceed to help the police solve the crime. The police chief lends enough of a helping hand to be vindicated.

He runs into problems with two of the paper's star reporters, Lorelei Kilbourne (Hillary Brooke) and Pete Ryan (Robert Lowery), when his aggressive demands that they employ a yellow journalism type of reporting to build circulation, and they both resign to work for another newspaper. Wilson begins to realize that while his type of journalism does build circulation, it has also brought ruin and disgrace to some innocent victims. Lorelei and Pete are brought back by Wilson with his promise that "The Illustrated Press" will become a crusader against evil.

Rory Calhoun, Paul Kelly and John Abbot are beachcombers/semi-derelicts on an unnamed but well-policed tropical island. Kelly, a sea captain in disgrace, is ordered to pilot a ship full of champaigne to Sydney, that has been lying in the harbor since its captain and most of the crew died of plague. He takes the other two along and plans on sailing elsewhere to sell the cargo. After anchors aweigh, they discover that Rhonda Fleming, the daughter of the deceased captain, is on board. This complicates matters, as does a fire on board, as does the discovery that the champaigne cargo is really water. They arrive at an uncharted island ruled by Alan Napier, a sophisticated British gentleman who is several cards short of playing with a full deck. Crazy as a bedbug. More complications arise, such as snake pits and acid-assassination attempts. Napier likes to keep his island tidy...something Sam Newfield was unable to do with this film as the director. At PRC, he was used to Buster Crabbe and "Fuzzy" St. John riding in and connecting the dots.

He persuades Madame Walter (Katherine Emery), the wife of his publisher, to fall in love with him, and then compromises Madeleine to frame a divorce, so he can pursue Madame Walter's daughter, Suzanne (Susan Douglas, before somebody decided her later-married name was her most-often used screen name.) He moves along so well that ere long he is in legal position to usurp the title of one of France's most noble houses. The moral, at the end, is it is okay to mess with French women, but triffling with French titles is going too far.

Rawlins sabotages Johnny's rig, causing Chicopee's death. Confidence man Oliver Westbrook (William Frawley) and his confederate, Nan Dearing (Arline Judge) hatch a plan to swindle Johnny by having Nan pose as Chicopee's sister. It works and Johnny makes Nan his partner. Another accident staged by Rawlins forces Johnny to sign a note to get money for repair. Nan falls in love with Johnny and abandons her plan to swindle him. As the note deadline approaches, Johnny learns that Sloane has purchased it as a means of taking over the well.

First of all this film was produced and distributed in 1938, and is not a 1941 production. The exhibitors and various censor boards objected to the original title, "The Sunset Strip Case" (because of the double meaning that implied a strip on Sunset rather than the name of the street, which is exactly what the producer had in mind when he hired fan-dancer Sally Rand, the hit of the Chicago Exposition and the later Texas Centennial), and Boston promptly banned the film, as Boston was often subject to do with far less reason than they had with this film. The film was tied up in law suits across the country brought against the various blue-nose boards who also blocked its showing, and all this was going on during the collapse of Grand National with GN president E. W. Hammons being hauled to court by exhibitors and creditors, including the production unit headed by this film's producer George A. Hirliman. The latter produced it for Grand National distribution, but Grand National had no distribution left when Hirliman finally got it cleared for showing in New York in 1941 under the title of "The Sunset Murder Case"...and it was distribued through indie exchanges in 1941 as Grand National had long folded its tent. It still carried the Grand National logo, which evidently has fooled the source that keeps calling this a 1941 production, and showing it as being distributed by an entity that no longer existed. The cast order shown on the 1941 prints is no way reflective of the cast order shown on original release. Excuse the use of Plot Summary to explain why this is not a 1941 film, but that is beginning to appear to be the only way to get this film into its proper decade. The plot summary, albeit skimpy,already on site will suffice for the plot. Be advised that Sally Rand was slower with her fans and showed more flesh in a later-Soundies short film than she does here. This one ran into trouble in 1938 because of her name, and not what she actually showed, although she showed more than was custom in 1938...or 1948 or 1958 for that matter.

Later, both Mike and Jan are captured and the agents realize that Mike is not the brother they are after. Paul is also brought to the hideout, but Mike gets the drop on them.

Before she has a chance to warn Frankie, Mannie's henchmen go to work and a gangland shootout ensues.

Oliver persuades old man Ross to re-open the canneries and to use the ground-breaking barrels and things appear to be going okay, until Dennis Andrews (Walter Byron), Ross' slick attorney, tries to doubel-cross both Ross and Oliver by bilking Angus out of the patent rights to the barrel.

Long-time (past and future) O'Brien director David Howard served as Hirliman's Associate Producer on this film. "Windjammer" finds O'Brien as a subpoena server ordered to serve a subpoena on Brandon Evans (The Commondore) for a senate inquiry or lose his job. Posing as a playboy, he boards the Commondore's yacht during a yacht race, and the yacht is wrecked by a gun-running windjammer commanded by Captain Morgan (William Hall.) All hands are picked up by the windjammer, including the Commondore's daughter (played by Constance Worth, at her blonde, plumpish best) and put to work as galley slaves and such, but it isn't long before O'Brien starts knocking heads, and making the gun-runners wish they had left him swimming.
