Laurence Olivier

I am a great admirer of Laurence Olivier i first became interested in him as an actor in the early 60's when i saw him on TV in his film production of Shakespeare's Richard 111 i was bowled over by his powerful performance and became an instant fan, i think as a child i had seen him on Tv also in Wuthering Heights but did not know who he was at the time. I decided to find out more about him and i brought a book called the Oliviers in a secondhand book shop in the West end of London i discovered that he was once married to Vivien Leigh the star of Gone with the Wind who i also greatly admire as an actress. Olivier indroduced me to Shakespeare as i then went to a season of his films showing in London at the time Richard 111, Hamlet, and Henry V. Olivier was one of the first people to bring Shakespeare to the masses on film and i think he did a brillant job, to my mind no-one else has ever done it better he played the leading roles produced and directed. His many stage performances have gone down in theatrical history i am only sorry i was not around to see them most of them were before i was born. I wrote to him in the 60's also and said how much i had enjoyed his performances in his three Shakespeare productions and he wrote back thanking me for my kind words and sent me two signed photos one of him as Richard 111, and one of himself out of character. I was very sad when he died as i thought it was the passing of an era regarding such a great actor. Vivien Leigh was i think a much better actress than ever given credit for her performance as Blanche in a streetcar named desire had such pathos i think, the sad fact about the Oliviers was their stormy relationship but i personally although they could not live together anymore their love for each other never died.

Class...ic Actor (1907-1989)

Sir Laurence was one of the classiest actors of the 20th century. He had an abundance of British male acting competitors with whom to be compared, yet still stands out among them all. People think of him as the husband of Vivian Leigh; but, his longest term, 'til death to us part' wife was the legendary actor, Joan Plowright, with whom he had 3 of his 4 children. It's challenging to pick a favorite classic film acted by Sir Laurence since there are so many. If pressed to pick only 1 it would be "Rebecca," co-starring Joan Fontaine, one of director Sir Alfred's all time classics.

Laurence Olivier is a great actor who never ceases to amaze me. Most of you probably know him from ALFRED HITCHCOCKS "Rebecca", which happens to be one of my favorite movies. Overall he's just a great actor who made his characters the best by using his heart and soul!!! P.S. It doesn't hurt that he is so handsome!!!!

I love Olivier's early years as a matinee idol. His pictures with Vivien Leigh were great, as were his costume dramas. I also like him in light romantic comedy, although he's not generally known for such things. My favorites are: That Hamilton Woman Fire Over England Wuthering Heights Rebecca Divorce of Lady X

Laurence Olivier is one of the best and most talented actors of all time. No matter how ill he became in his old age, he was always committed and pushed himself to do better. If you're not a fan, you are definately missing out.
