THE PHONEY AMERICAN
- ELKE GROSS
THIS IS THE STORY OF MY FATHER.HEINZ GROSS. SADLY,I NEVER KNEW HIM. HE DIED IN BERLIN IN THE SIXTIES FROM T.B. DURING HIS LIFETIME,HE SURVIVED THE BOMBING OF BERLIN AND THE CARNAGE THAT FOLLOWED IT. HE SOMEHOW WANGLED HIS WAY INTO THE AMERICAN ARMY AND SOMEHOW CONVINCED THE POWERS THAT BE THAT HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE AMERICAN FORCES,EVEN HELPING OUT IN THE BERLIN AIRLIFT. HE GAVE HIMSELF UP AND HAD A VERY HARD TIME TRYING TO CONVINCE THE POWERS THAT BE ,THAT HE WAS IN FACT GERMAN AND WAS IN THE HITLER YOUTH WHEN THE WAR ENDED. ANY HELP AS TO HIS TIME WITH THE AMERICAN FORCES WOULD BE OF GREAT. THE TITLE OF THE BOOK IS"EIN TOLLER HECHT AUF"
Not "...a Revoltin' devlopement".

Always enjoyed William Bendix in films such as LIFEBOAT, GUADALCANAL DIARY, WAKE ISLAND, THE DETECTIVE STORY, THE DEEP SIX, THE GLASS KEY and THE BLUE DAHLIA just to name a few. Equally adept as comic relief or dark, menacing prescence, he brought a lot to the table with his performances than just THE LIFE OF RILEY's Chester A Reilly.

I had the honor of visiting Mr Bendix's grave at Mission Hills Cemetery and placing a rose on the grave of a much missed and loved actor. A New York boy like myself, he left us way too soon!
I would like to see more of his films.
The lovable tough guy
- Jeff Nathan
One of the greatest character actors of all time. His death scene in "Life Boat" is outstanding. Multi-talented he sang, danced and brought humanity to evry role he played. Truly an unsung talent.
