b. March 21, 1893 Newark, NJ
d. February 12, 1966 Los Angeles, CA.
A national gymnastics champion from 1916 to 1918, Merrill was the stunt double for Elmo Lincoln in “Tarzan of the Apes” (1918) and became the 5th movie ‘Tarzan.’ He introduced rope climbing, vine swinging and acrobatics in his Tarzan impersonation, traits that carried on to future Tarzan players. When sound films were introduced, Merrill’s career ended. He later served as Park Commissioner for the City of Los Angeles.
