Gardner McKay - Author
I have had the good fortune to find the writings of Gardner McKay. Most have been published posthumously thanks to the diligence of his widow Madeleine Madigan McKay. I treated myself to "Journey Without A Map" for my birthday and was amazed at the life time of achievements this man experienced. The memories moved me to the full gamut of anger, tears, amazement and joy in turn as the story unfolded. Next I read "The Kinsman". For anyone who is a sailor it is full of the drama of the America's Cup Race. The technical terminology was confounding for a landlubber like myself, but the story surrounding it was full of drama that made for a page turner. I bought the play "Sea Marks" and was so tangled up in the direction that I kept losing the dialogue, but I was saved by the DVD. I cannot say enough about Mr. McKay's play and the passionate performance of the actors in that DVD. I immediately loaned it to a friend who shared in my assessment of the work. For Christmas I bought the books "10, Bloomsbury Square" and "Trompe L'Oeil'. I am currently reading "10, Bloomsbury Square" and wish I was still teaching so I could share this light hearted and imaginative story with my class. "Trompe L'Oeil" is next on my list. I also have "Toyer" on my table and have managed to get to page 57. This is a rather dark story but I am determined to read it this time. Although I truly enjoy a good mystery, this is outside my usual type of mystery and it may take me some time to finish it. I regret that I live in New Jersey and couldn't hear the "Stories on the Wind" written and read by Mr. McKay. I wish that they could be published in print form or better still could be issued as CDs. Perhaps to benefit Mr. McKay's estate and the radio station that aired them. I am searching for other written work, but it isn't always easy to obtain.
