Greatest sidekick - ever!
I first noticed Frank McHugh in several James Cagney movies. As I watched a number of movies staring Cagney such as, The Crowd Roars, The Irish in Us, and Footlight Parade, I keep seeing the same 'sidekick' actor. But then, he kept showing up in other movies along side other legendary stars like Bing Crosby, Errol Flynn, Kay Francis, Merle Oberon, Spencer Tracy, and Pat O'Brien in big movies such as Going My Way, Virginia City, 'Til We Meet Again and so many others. I finally had to look up and find out who this actor was that seem to be in everything! I have often wondered how he got all the roles he starred in. Great talent, but it had to be more than that - he had to have been easy to work with, reliable and a great guy for him to be sought after and accepted by Hollywood's top stars and directors. I love when I 'discover' another Frank McHugh movie by him showing up in a new movie that I have never seen. Happens lot! Happened this morning when he popped up in Gold Diggers of 1935. I love watching movies on TCM and when it comes to Frank McHugh I seem to always be saying the same thing....'there he is again!' As far as supporting 'sidekick' actors Frank is my all-time favorite!
Frank McHugh - No respect
I was shocked to find no bio on this great actor! I loved him in everything. Going my way, anyone?
What a Cutie!
As a character actor, Frank is SUCH a treat to watch! I fall in love with every character he plays, simply because he is just so darn lovable & cute as anything! He lights up every scene he's in. Frank has a gentle and kind way about himself, that I'm sure didn't differ from real life. You can tell just by looking at him that he was funny as anything, but had a gentle & loving soul! I enjoy watching his movies on TCM whenever they air. :) Please try and air 'He Couldn't Say No' from 1938!!!

This guy was great to watch, no matter what he played in.
A sidekick with a kick
His work keeps "I Love You Again" spritely and above the speed limit. He clearly gives Powell and Loy a little something more to work with. Besides "After the Thin Man" -- with Jimmy Stewart, Jesse Ralph among other standouts -- McHugh may provide the best supporting lineup for the two superstars. Also good in other comedies.
