  I have just ordered a DVD of "The Enchanted Cottage," which I saw during my last year in high school. Having only begun to know who I was in 1945, I found the symbolism of this odd couple to be very significant. Deprived of the physical traits that others use to value them, they discover their true selves through each other. This movie symbolizes the hope that "unchosen" ones can find in another, who sees them as their inner self really is. As a post-80 grandmother with a mate who still sees me as beautiful, this film continues to be an expression of what relationships ought to be.   I discovered Dorothy Mcguire as a young boy when I watched "The Enchanted Cottage." I always felt drawn to her character and felt so bad when the soldier who was approaching her for a dance suddenly stops and acts as if he were doing something else. As I watched other movies with her I noticed that she always gave a great performance that seemed genuine. You really believed she was that person. I've made it a point to always watch one of her movies when it airs on TCM and have enjoyed everything I've seen. I especially like her work in "Invitation" and "The Spiral Staircase", both are fantastic movies. She is without a doubt one of the most under-rated actresses of Hollywood's golden age.

  Dorothy McGuire seemed to be the typer person one would take home to mother. And certainly the type one's family wound WANT you to take home to them! We need her type actresses, but they just don't exist anymore.

  she was always so real there wan an underlying steeliness in her acting she appeared so soft on the out side but she could be so icy also never got the roles or the credit she deserved if you want to see just one example of great acting catch her katie nolan in a tree grows in brooklyn and then contrast that with her roles in the enchanted cottage invitation three coins in the fountain the spiral staircase and friendly persuasion
