If you're a fan of "Gone with the Wind" or Hattie McDaniel, you really need to see "Hattie What I Need You To Know," a celebration of Hattie McDaniel, the first African American to win the Academy Award in 1940. The show is currently running at the Hudson Theatre in Hollywood after successful runs in Harlem and Denver. Written by acclaimed actress of stage and screen, Vickilyn Reynolds, who has starred in "Bring In da Noise, Bring In da Funk," "The Colored Museum" and "Mama I Want to Sing," "Hattie What I Need You To Know" captures the essence of Hattie McDaniel's humble beginnings in Denver and her rise to stardom in Hollywood.

I think Ms McDaniels was wonderful. There was no one else like her. Just think what great parts she could get in todays movies. I always loved her wise cracking and wish she had bigger parts. She was a great actress and I wish she hadn't been taken so early.

Hattie McDaniels paved the way for all African-American actors and actresses. Without her, there would be no Denzel Washingtons or Halle Berrys. Thank you, Ms. McDaniels.

Hattie was by far one of the greats, she didnt mind playing a maid, she said, and I quote, I rather play a maid and make $7,000 a week then to be a maid and make $7 a day! My sentiments exactly. I love everything she did, her comedic timing was so on cue, her facial expressions, she most always stole the sceens from all of her counter parts. I believe she would have been a great dramatic actress if she had been give the chance. I say go Girl?

In Gone With the Wind Hattie McDaniel was leader in history of Black American actress. Hattie had to stand prejudice and bias from both sides of America. What a women that show people that I can take the character of mammy and make more sucessful, entertaining and skilled slave than people can imagine this part could be for black actress. I loved Hattie in Gone With The Wind.

At a time in Hollywood when not many african americans worked, she was the best at what she was given to work with. An example of pride and joy to all americans.

Hattie is the best Hollywood actress ever! She has been the biggest inspiration to my watching classic movies. Before I had her filmography list I would watch every classic movie I could just to catch a glimpse of her. She was a large black woman and even though people say the image of a black maid is bad I know that her image made every movie she was in a hit. I am proud of Hattie, she was amazing, beautiful, so beautiful I could never get tired of looking at her or listening to the clever sound of her voice. She does not ooze sex appeal, she never had to. She was one of the only female actresses that did not have to sell herself sexually to get on the screen. She didnt have to starve herself either. We all liked her just the way God made her.
