BIOGRAPHY

Nimbus-haired, scowling character actor who made his film debut in the savage gangster film, "The Criminal" (1960) and is probably best known as the vengeful scribe in the nightmarish masterpiece, "A Clockwork Orange" (1971).

Died: Aug. 14, 1982. Won Tony Award for performance as Marquis de Sade in 1965 Broadway production of "Marat/Sade." Originated title role in Samuel Beckett's "Krapp's Last Tape," written with him in mind.
