Bela Lugosi:The Legend
- Hunter Zuel
I just love Bela Lugosi, because of his eyes in Dracula (1931) , and the way he was originally a stage actor and you can definitely see that in the way he acts. He is one of my all time favorite actors in the classic horror films of Universal and he is amazing in White Zombie (1935).

Quick correction; *never once were we led to believe that he WASN'T in complete control of himself*.
LUGOSI, Bela The Great!!!

To my taste, Bela Lugosi is one of the finest actors of his era, and it is unfortunate that we have so little in his eventual body of work that can be considered quality cinema. When Bela was apart of a quality production, he flourishes. And even, as was often the case, when everything around him was so obviously beneath him (the Monogram films, Ed Wood, etc.), he still managed to caste his spell. Lugosi was by nature, a very intense personality, and that served him well in his performances, almost has much as it may have hindered him from time to time. People are understandably turned off by his broad histrionics and "Out-Herods Herod" style, but at the same time, never once have we been led to believe that he was in complete control of himself. He gave dedication, technique, passion, presence and integrity to each role he took on. He suffers, sometimes unfairly from being compared with his frequent co-star, and much more respected "rival", Boris Karloff so often, but I've always felt that there is room to admire both actors for their unique talents. Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff are my two favorite actors to watch on a consistent basis, and I don't feel I have to choose between the two ever. Besides, the films they did make together are pure delirium and delight! However, I've always felt a little more affection for Bela. Call it nostalgia or "sentimental hogwash", but Lugosi is just mesmerizing to me!
Bela Lugosi, was & still is the best Dracula that has ever graced the golden screen. He's got the tatlent, the look & let's not forget the voice! Love Bela Lugosi in any movie that he appears in! Hope too see more Bela Lugosi 's movies on TCM.
The Dracula we all know!
- Todd M.
He was one of the best actors of his era, in my opinion, although he was often overshadowed by Boris who I feel is also great! He certainly is the best Hungarian actor that I can think of, and he did very well in many roles besides his famous Dracula role, in films like White Zombie, the Black Cat, and Murders in the Rue Morgue! But what we have to realize is that he is the reason Dracula is such a pop culture figure, without Bela, vampires would have almost none of the features we picture them with! And lets not forget the voice! No one could deliver those iconic lines in that film the way Lugosi could. All around, I think he's a great actor, and very underrated!
