Thank you, TCM, for introduction to Roger Livesey
- Jene Byrnes
"I Know Where I'm Going!" was one of the offerings on TCM's app, a title I was unfamiliar with. During a stretch of insomnia, I thought I'd give it a look. Well, after 2 consecutive viewings I am in love with this film, thrilled by another performance by Wendy Hiller, and doubly delighted to learn of actor Roger Livesey. Livesey has a beautiful voice, unaffected acting style, is so totally and thoroughly believable in his role - it's amazing to learn that Livesey never filmed on location, but shot mostly on soundstages due to his commitment in a play. I realize now Livesey played Col Blimp (The Life and Death of Col. Blimp) - I never put the two together. It's so pleasing that there are always new great performances to "discover" on TCM. There's a video on YouTube, "I Know Where I'm Going Revisited 1994 (Powell and Pressburger)" [Mark Cousin's documentary]. Martin Scorsese is interviewed. He speaks of falling in love with this film, and about the feeling of discovering a new masterpiece - "other people knew about it, I didn't..." That is the feeling I get with both the film and Livesey - the thrill of "discovering" someone new and exciting, or more of stumbling upon a scenic route that is well known to inhabitants but new to the infrequent traveler. Now that I have been introduced to Livesey, I am eagerly seeking more of his work to enjoy.
