Despite the protests of his friends, he marries Lola, who is intrigued by the idea of being the wife of a professor. The intrigue doesn't last long, as Rath is unable to get work because of his wife. He becomes a broken character, reduced to performing odd jobs around the troupe and living off the earnings of his wife. When the troupe returns to his hometown, Kiepert brutally uses him in a magic act as a shill to attract customers from among his old students and friends. Lola meets a former lover and, as Rath is being degraded on the stage, she allows the former lover to make love to her in sight of her husband. Rath goes beserk and sets out to strangle her.

When jockey Dan Butler wins a steeplechase race he had agreed to throw, he is roughed up and threatened by the racketeer he disappointed, Louis Bork. Dan and his young son Joe travel through Europe, Dan hoping to win enough to pay off Bork and get Joe safely back to America.
In 1928, Big Ed Hanley (Paul Douglas), boss of a gang of Chicago racketeers, has money and power, but he is bored. Watching some kids play in the park, he sees Ruth Manning (Jean Peters) and is interested at once. He tells her he has a couple of kids and gives her the job of taking care of them. He moves Mamie (Joan Davis) in as a housekeeper, but the best he can scrape up as a son is Harry, a pint-sized monster. A couple of henchmen sent by to rub Big Ed out by his rival, Pretty Willie (Cesar Romero), are relieved of their hardware by Quentin (Arthur Treacher), Ed's butler, and Bugs, his right-hand man. They march them downstairs, supposedly to drop in the river, but actually leave them in a very nice jail maintained by Ed for gangsters who drop by to rub him out. Ed's problems include keeping Ruth, who has begun to like him, from finding out about his activities, increasing his family and keeping uninvited guests from dropping by.

He finds out that she is engaged to Bill Van Dyke (Glenn Langan), a young diplomat, and follows her to London , entering the horse he acquired from Aunt Helen in the famed Ascot Gold Cup. Jock and Leslie fall in love and are married on a boat to South America. In Buenos Aires, Leslie is jealous of Kitty Brant (Helen Walker), an old flame of Jock's. Leslie wants Jock to settle down on his Maryland farm to raise and sell race horses, but he has too much gypsy in his blood and wants to follow the race-track circuit. They separate and he gives Leslie the horse that brought them together, and he hits the road. Leslie and old-time trainer "Doc" Ellbourne (James Gleason) then proceed to win race after race with the horse. Jock, contrite and converted, returns to his old homestead and begins training another horse. Will his horse beat her horse?

In between gathering clues, the kids play matchmaker by trying to fix up their widowed mom with the handsome detective investigating the case.

When her brother, Jeff Cairn (John Payne), enlists in the Navy, Nella is sent to board with a cousin, but is unhappy and returns to the boarding house. Pecket sends for Jenny (June Haver), a waitress for Mr. Agrippa (Oliver Blake) at his lunchroom and sweetheart of Jeff. Pecket and Jenny together decide to take care of Nella, when she receives a telegram from the War Department advising that Jeff is missing in action. To console the young girl, Pecket tells her they'll sail out to a wonderful island he knows about where he is sure Jeff can be found. The widow March, incensed about gossip she hears that Pecket is entertaining women guests on his boat, sells it to Mr. Agrippa, who wants to make a hamburger stand out of it. He has a man install wheels on it and plans to tow it away the next day. Pecket, Jenny and Nella have a meeting on the boat, a storm blows up, and since the sails are set, the "Sara March" puts out to "sea,", where it becomes "reefed" in a haystack. A young itinerant dentist, Howard Williams (John Ireland), offers to tow them but runs out of gas just as they reach Dignman's Ferry. He suggests they launch the boat, and all hands, including Williams, who comes in handy when they encounter a scientist in need of dental work, set sail on an enchanted voyage for Pecket's rendezvous island..to find Jeff.

But he can't bring himself to murder her in cold blood and asks Elaine to get the medicine to save her. She refuses, they argue, and he strangles her. He saves Janet's life, but now faces two murder charges.

American bomber pilot Captain Jeff Dakin (George Montgomery) is shot down on a bombing raid over German-held territory. As his crew bails out, Jeff sees his bombadier brother, Lt. Danny Dakin (Richard Graham), machine-gunned to death as he is drifting to earth. After being taken prisoner Jeff learns the name of the man who murdered his brother---Nazi ace Major Von Streicher (Martin Kosleck). In the concentration camp he begins a plan of escape with two other prisoners; Czech prisoner Captain Paul Husnik (Kent Taylor) and a young Russian doctor, Alexandra "Alec" Zoreisch (Annabella). The three escape during an air raid. Jeff begins to take a dislike to Paul over several incidents that arouse his suspicions. Actually Paul is Gestapo officer Paul van Brock who has engineered the escape in the hope that the Alec will lead him to the leaders of the underground movement. They manage to reach the home of a friend of Alec's father, where Paul reveals his true colors by killing the underground leader and calling the Gestapo. Jeff overpowers Paul and he and Alec escape and elude the Nazi agents. Reaching Holland, where plans have been set for their escape, Jeff learns that the plane in which he was shot down has been re-built by the Nazis for a mysterious flight to England. He refuses to take the boat with Alec and, disguised as a German soldier, learns the details of the flight plan and that the man who murdered his brother, Von Streicher, is to pilot the plane. Jeff steals a Nazi plane and heads for the English Channel to intercept Von Streicher.
It is a toss-up as to who is most displeased when Patrolman Moe Finkelstein (Milton Berle) is given the duty of guarding the German consulate ran by Karl Baumer (Otto Preminger); neither Moe nor Baumer are too happy with this turn of events. Moe, however, quickly becomes fiends with the other residents of the consulate: Sophie Baumer (Joan Bennett), the consul's wife; the secretary Baron Max Von Alvenstor (Carl Esmond); and a pretty maid named Freida (Poldi Dur as Poldy Dur.)Moe senses an underlying tension that is not entirely accounted for by the gathering clouds of war. The gambling-loving Baumer has lost a large sum of money belonging to the German government, Sophie has learned to hate her husband and what he stands for and represents, and Baron Max has fallen in love with her. Max confronts Baumer with the discrepancy in the consulate's funds, and Baumer threatens to inform Berlin that one of Max's grandparents was not "Aryan." The arrival of a group of Nazi saboteurs (Ted North, Elmer Jack Semple and J. Norton Dunn) and the insistence they be given the funds to finance their project stirs consulate affairs even further.

Cobb), that lives near the plant, over the objections of his daughter Odette Bonnard (Annabella), who believes that the British were responsible for the fall of France. Her attitude softens toward Carter, who is living with the family as posing as a son, but Odette cannot bring herself to aid in Carter's plan because of her fear of reprisals against her family. She turns informer and the Nazis capture Carter.

The problem with the mystery stories concocted by Jason Cord (Milton Berle) is that he can never figure out who's guilty. Stuck, as usual, he takes his latest unfinished "who-dunit" to the office of his wife, Patricia Cord (Mary Beth Hughes), whose boss, Brennan (Reginald Denny), doesn't know she is married. Hidden in a closet, Jason overhears Brennan and his partners discussing a situation which exactly parallels his new story. He steps out when the discussion reaches the point of his story's current progress and, seeing a chance of finding an ending to his story, offers to make a suicide look like a murder. He soon finds himself the central figure in a front-page murder trial before he proves the supposed suicide to have been an actual murder - committed by one of the victim's partners.
The boys operate a ballet school (appearing in drag) and try to help a young inventor sell his idea, to get in the good graces of his girl's father. In their efforts, they get involved with a gang of insurance racketeers. All ends well.
Hubert Wilkins (Stuart Erwin), a bookkeeper for Mr. Bates (Thurston Hall) by day and an air raid warden by night, patrols the district where his boss' warehouse is located, and finds two employees removing raw silk stocks. They say they are working under Bates' orders and brush him off. Hubert wants to marry Emily Conway (Elelyn Venable), company secretary, but can't see how he can afford it since he has loaned a salesman, Fuller (Chick Chandler), $400 with deeds to four lots as security. Don Bates (William T. Orr), son of the boss, is engaged to Emily's sister Sally (Vivian Blaine) though his father disapproves. He and Emily encourage Sally and Don to elope. Hubert, a little tipsy, buys two more lots from Fuller and goes to Bates' home and asks for a raise. He is fired and, the next morning, Emily also for helping Don to elope. Hubert discovers that the lots he bought are worth $100,000 and, unknown to Bates, buys the company. While on warden duty that night, he discovers that the two employees he previously saw taking silk from the warehouse are actually stealing it.

After a discouraging period during which he was disowned by his foster father and lost his appointment to West Point, he found the love that tamed his restless heart with Virginia Clemm (Linda Darnell). After he and Virginia married, Poe did his greatest creative work, writing for the Southern Literary Messenger and Graham's Magazine.
When the Japanese capture the principal radio station of the American Radio Communications Company in the Philippines, the staff manages to escape into the jungle, tie up with a band of Filipino Scouts (Moros) and make their way to the coast. The party, radio technician Jeff Bailey (Cornel Wilde) and communications men Lucky Matthews (Lloyd Nolan) and Tom O'Rourke (James Gleason), finds an advance Japanese unit on the plantation of an old friend and, working with the Moros as a guerilla unit, attack and seize the site from the Japanese in order to use the radio transmitter. Solidifying themselves in the stronghold they discover there is no food or water and it is surrounded by the Japanese. A night club singer, Edna Fraser (Carole Landis), escaping from the Japanese, gets into the plantation. Jeff is working to fix their radio set, hoping to send a message of hope and courage to the conquered and enslaved Filipinos of the district, and the Japanese, aware of this possibility, are using every means to wipe out the group.

Attracted to Karen, Roberts invites her to his apartment where she learns his secret. The old philatelist is sent to a concentration camp, and then Karen learns that he is her father (Erwin Kalser). She appeals to Roberts for help and he, in loyality to the old man and now in love with Karen, agrees to help.

Stamp collector Julie Martin (Brenda Joyce) follows postal inspector Brennon (Stanley Andrews) on his delivery tour, hoping to find some rare stamps for her philatelist customers. One letter brings love and warmth to a lonely spinster from a sweetheart lost in a war, another a welcome bravery citation to Civil War veteran Slade (Will Wright) and a third is to the parents of the now-state governor from his high school principal requesting he be disciplined for throwing spitballs in class. Dan Carter (Richard Travis), the owner of the village supply store who extends local farmers unlimited credit and, as a result, is on the verge of foreclosure by the ruthless Harwood banking family, get a letter sent by his grandfather to his father containing 500 shares of stock in the Harwood bank. The Harwood family fights back by charging Dan with fraud, but Judge Colt (Spencer Charters) and Dan's Aunt Martha (Emma Dunn) aid him.

Private detective Michael Shayne (Lloyd Nolan) is serving on the jury trying Lillian Hubbard (Janis Carter) for the murder of Harley Forsythe. A witness with information that could clear Lillian is killed by a knife hurled from inside the courtroom. Shyane hides the knife in the ensuing confusion. He slips out of the jury room that night and, with the aid of reporter Judy Taylor (Marjorie Weaver), traces the knife to a professional blade-slinger, Count Edmond Telmachio (Alexander Lockwood). Shayne finds the Count murdered in a warehouse and a brooch discovered on his body now points the finger of suspicion at nightclub singer Rita Darling (Joan Valerie) and the owner of the club where she works, George Dolphin (Don Costello). Rita was the fiancee of Forsythe and Dolphin is in love with her. The trial begins the next day, with Shayne back in the jury box, after giving the information he picked up to defense counsel John Logan (Richard Derr). The trial takes a surprise twist when Shayne is permitted to cross examine everyone, including the defense lawyer, who has been in love with Miss Hubbard for years.

In the shadows of the night Dudley Wolff (Paul Harvey), his secretary Alfred Dunning (Robert Emmett Keane), and his doctor, Haggard (Henry Wilcoxin), bury a body in the estate cemetary. At the house, Wolff's daughter Catherine (Marjorie Weaver) arrives unexpectedly and tells her step-mother Anne Wolff (Helene Reynolds) that she has just been married to Roger Blake (Richard Derr) who will be along in a few days. Cathy retires and is awakened by a mysterious assailant who fires a shot at her, but her parents tell her she was just dreaming. Wolff goes to the cemetary and finds the body missing. The scared Cathy calls in fast-talking private detective Mike Shayne (Lloyd Nolan) and, since her father doesn't like detectives, she introduces him as her husband. That evening Shayne hears a shot and finds that Haggard has been killed. While the police are questioning the family, the lights go out and a shot is fired from outside.
The boys are recruited by a gang of thugs to get a coffin containing one of their far from dead colleagues to Dayton to try and get at an inheritance. After the coffin gets switched with the one Dante the Magician uses in his act, his stage show gets more than usually popular.

At a December 7, 1941 Washington cocktail party, Connie Mathew (Virginia Bruce) is not amused by the romantic advances of playboy Tommy Aldrich (James Ellison), son of an important Navy consultant. The party is shocked by the news of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and Connie blithely announces she would like to serve Uncle Sam as a new version of Mata Hari. She finds Mr. Fortune (Aubrey Mather) waiting for her when she gets home and he introduces himself as a member of the Secret Service and asks her to join his staff. Thinking it is a practical joke by Tommy, she accepts. Fortune tells Connie her first assignment is to get friendly with Tommy, as the government suspects him of selling convoy information that he gets from his father to enemy agents. She does so, falls in love with him and finds out he is 100% loyal. Mr. Fortune takes Connie and Tommy captive. Connie's sister, Agatha (Sheila Ryan), had earlier suspected Mr. Fortune and she was taken prisoner by his Axis spies.

Detective Shayne is on a train headed for San Francisco with a surprise witness (Hughes) whom many on board would like to keep from testifying at a murder trial.
Rose Couglin (Lynn Bari) is a wise-cracking waitress at a coffe-pt diner with policemen Bob Brandon (Alan Curtis) and Herman Huff (Don DeFore billed as Don DeForest) vying for her attention. Their argument ends when the place is held up, but Brandon tricks the crook and captures him, but lets Herman take the credit. Herman now must sponsor Bob's application to the motrocycle force and is enev more dismayed when society deb Diana Hempstead (Sheila Ryan)takes a liking to Bob. Rose also finds herself involved with a swindle upon a refrigerator manufacturer by a bogus foreign potentate, Nabob (Gerald Mohr.)
A pair of murders in Rio de Janiero leads the local police to call the famed detective. Charlie is puzzled, at first, when it appears that one of the murderers is killed by the first victim's widow.
The Cisco Kid (Cesar Romero) is captured while keeping a rendezvous with cantina dancer Dolores (Joan Woodbury) but is released by his captor, the commander of a U.S. Army regiment, to help break up a kidnap ring. On his way to Las Tables with his pal, Gordito (Chris-Pin Martin), he makes a stop at the Martinez Rancho, where they learn that his friend Carlos (Robert Lowery) has been kidnapped, from his wife Marquerita (Lynne Roberts). At the Crystal Palace Saloon, Cisco runs into an old girlfriend, Sally (Mary Beth Hughes), who he once jilted for a tight-rope walker, but she doesn't betray him when the sheriff (Arthur Hohl) and an army officer (Robert 'Buddy' Shaw as Robert Shaw, since there was no other Robert Shaw at the time and this Robert Shaw had no need of the "Buddy" attribute given him by latter-day historians, who can't tell the players without a program and a roman numeral..and quite often not even then),enter searching for Cisco. While Cisco and the easily-forgiving Sally dance, the heads of the kidnap gang, the sheriff, Clark (Edwin Maxwell) and Redge (Don Costello), meet upstairs to discuss the plans for collecting the $50,000 ransom they have on Carlos. Cisco follows the kidnappers after they collect the ransom money, but before he can do anything about it, he is arrested and thrown in jail.
A wax museum run by a demented doctor contains statues of such crime figures as Jack the Ripper and Bluebeard the Pirate. In addition to making wax statues the doctor performs plastic surgery. It is here that an arch fiend takes refuge. The museum also houses a statue of Charlie. Frustrated number-two son kicks statue in rear; oops, number-two son wrong in his assumption.
US-to-Central-America freight service pilot (Nolan) marries radio broadcaster (Bari) and promises to take a desk job but the urge for adventure is too strong.
A southern girl (Withers) goes to a National Youth Association camp after her father goes to jail for bootlegging. When a mean tycoon tries to buy the campground for himself she stages a show which endears her to him. Then her father escapes and catches the crooks who took the tycoon's money, all is saved.

G-Man Chick Gardner (Brian Donlevy), posing as a taxi driver, convinces the members of a counterfeiting gang that he is on their side and is taken into the organization by Philip Strickland (Alan Dinehart), the boss, over the objections of gang lieutenant Flash Dillon (Gilbert Roland.) Gardner meets Gilda Lee (Frances Drake), a member of the gang, and learns of the planned smuggling of a load of counterfeit money at a remote wharf. He arranges with the Federal officers to foil the landing but their presence is detected and the gang escapes, with Gardner being wounded in the melee by his own men. Dillon discovers Gardner's true identity and tells Gilda to take him for a ride. Instead, she helps Gardner kill Dillon, in return for which he promises her immunity. She goes with Strickland to the yacht of John Rudd (Sig Rumann), who is the secret leader of the counterfeiters. Gardner and the federal agents follow her.

He gives Alice Fuller (Richelle Hudson),daughter of one of the fighters (Pat Flaherty) whom he aids , the job of following young Clint De Witt (John Beck), son of the "Globe's" owner, to see that he sticks to his job. Browne, who has fallen in love with Alice, thinks it is Clint she loves. In their effort to get Browne for his meddling, Richards and Stevens strike at him through Clint.
