Biography CLOSE THE FULL BIOGRAPHY

A television newscaster who became the target of many a tabloid rumor when she became known as Oprah Winfrey's best friend, Gayle King became a successful news anchor, magazine editor, radio host and daytime talk show personality who was almost as beloved by the public as her famous friend. King's close relationship with TV's most influential and inspiring woman, which began in the early 1980s when both were still carving out television careers, fueled rumors that they were something more than friends. Both insisted that the gay rumors were false, claiming that it was just a special bond between two straight women. Despite all the negative publicity King received as Winfrey's best gal pal, the enviable relationship no doubt also gave her the clout to pursue ventures that might not have otherwise been readily available to her. But even with all the perks extended to her as Winfrey's best friend, the headstrong King managed to excel at every career-making opportunity she pursued and to successfully make a name for herself through hard work and undeniable charm.
