Decided at age 12 to become an actor after Sir Frank Benson's acting company visited his town (date approximate)

1933:
Married Laura Liddell beginning their long career together as actors, running their own acting company

Formed the Shakespeareana company with Peter Meriton and began a year long tour of India, through floods, monsoons and political unrest, performing classic drama and Shakespeare on makeshift stages

Returned to India with a large company sponsored by Lady Edwina Mountbatten and toured the East for nearly twenty years
