One of a kind
- Wayne Brasler
Dorothy Lamour was unlike any other major film star. She was not a great beauty. She was not a great singer. She was not a great actress. She was not a flashy dancer. But she had a certain something, an authenticity, an appeal that let the viewer admire her and love her without her trying to get admiration and love. Her acting was monotone, no highs or lows, no great strengths at drama or comedy, yet she invariably made every film she appeared in better. I think she simply was made for the spotlight! To me she looked like the most gorgeous woman on earth. To me she sounded like greatest female popular singer of her era. To me she was just right in dramatic films and just magic in comedy films. Everyone in show business evidently adored her. She led a wonderful life and made a major contribution to War effort through selling bonds and entertaining the troops. She made an easy transition from film to stage to being a club act. In other words, she had something which I think came from the inside, a quality which cannot be manufactured but is genuine and which people recognize as genuine. As for not being a great singer, I think I have to revise that notion. One listen to "I'm in the Mood for Love" and I have to say she is, after all, a great singer.
